Project Date Presenters: Naomi and Kate

What is Project Date? Project Date is a date/acquaintance rape and sexual assault prevention program. We are sponsored by the University Counseling Services and Valley Trauma Center Our mission is to educate our campus community about issues relating to rape and sexual assault and eventually reach the goal of making CSUN a rape free environment

Presentation Courtesy We will be talking about topics that may make you feel uncomfortable We ask that you to keep an open mind and be respectful to anyone speaking

Exercise and Discussion Picture a stereotypical scene where a rape would occur Describe the rapist Describe the victim Describe the setting

General Rape Statistics 1 in 3 females will be assaulted by the time they are 18 1 in 4 females over 18 are sexually assaulted 1 in 6 males under 18 are sexually assaulted 1 in 33 males over 18 are sexually assaulted Freshmen females are at highest risk of being raped or sexually assaulted, especially during the first 6 weeks of the new academic year 1 in 12 college men have unknowingly committed an act that meets the legal definition of rape

Sexual Assault Sexual assault Rape Acquaintance rape Date Rape Child molestation Spousal rape Gang/party rape Statutory rape Incest

Acquaintance Rape Role Play

Consent Consent is defined as when both parties act freely and voluntarily and must have knowledge of what is going on

5 Ways to Lose Consent Seduction/Manipulation Coercion/Intimidation Force Alcohol & Drugs Asleep/Unconscious Secret six = Mentally disabled

Acquaintance Rape Stats About 75% of the men and at least 55% of the women involved in acquaintance rape has been drinking or taking drugs just before the attack 84% of women who have been assaulted, knew the man that attacked them, with more than half of these assaults happening on dates 42% of the rape victims told no one about their assaults 41% of rape victims say that they expect to be raped again 84% of men who committed rape said that what they did was definitely not rape 38% of women who had been raped were 14, 15, 16 or 17 years old at the time of their assault

Statement In most cases when a woman was raped, she was asking for it If a woman is going to be raped she might as well enjoy it Women provoke rape by their appearance or behavior A woman should be responsible for preventing her victimization in a rape The degree of a woman’s resistance should be the major factor in determining if a rape has occurred In order to protect the male, it should be difficult to prove that a rape has occurred It would do some women some good to get raped PERCENTAGE OF MEN AGREEING 17 PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN AGREEING

Statement I prefer relatively small women I like to dominate a woman I enjoy the conquest part of sex Some women look like they’re just asking to be raped I get excited when a woman struggles over sex It would be exciting to use force to subdue a woman PERCENTAGE AGREEING

Action Committed Against Woman’s Wishes Percentage of Men Who Had Done It Kissed her Placed hand on her knee Placed hand on her breast Placed hand on her thigh or crotch Removed or disarranged outer clothing

How to Prevent Sexual Assault Trust your feelings Don’t allow room for misinterpretation when you say “No” keep control of your environment Use the buddy system Never force anyone to have sex, even if it seems like they are“leading” you on “No” means “NO” Speak up if you are getting a double message from someone Don’t assume that you know what the other person wants

REMEMBER: RAPE = CONTROL & POWER, NOT SEX!
