National Rape Evidence Project Proposal

What is NREP? The National Rape Evidence Project (NREP) is a national campaign founded by Howard Safir, former Police Commissioner for the City of New York. What is its purpose? Collect and distribute private funds to local law enforcement agencies to support expedited DNA testing for 20,000 to 40,000 rape evidence collection kits currently stored in police departments across the U.S. Increase public awareness of the number of backlogged kits and the need for systematic change in order to prevent the backlog from recurring introduction

legal information What about the Statute of Limitations on crimes? At least 19 states have no statute of limitations for the prosecution of serious sex offenses. At least 12 more have extended their criminal statutes of limitation for sex offenses where there is DNA evidence. Currently there is a bill in Congress named DNA Sexual Assault Justice Act of 2002 that would remove the expiration of the statute of limitations in cases where an offender is unknown by anything other than the DNA profile
