Unite Against Violence Against Women. Cheyenne Pettiford

Violence is NOT to be taken lightly.

Around the world at least 1 woman in every 3 has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Most often the abuser is a member of her own family.

Every 9 seconds, a woman in the United States is assaulted or beaten.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. 92% of women surveyed listed reducing domestic violence and sexual assault as their top concern.

What is Domestic Violence?

Physical Violence. Verbal Abuse. Sexual, Emotional, and Psychological Pressure. Stalking.

Physical. Verbal. Sexual.

Physical abuse involves being physically beaten or harmed. Being subjected to harmful conditions is also considered physical abuse.

Verbal abuse involves being sworn at, demeaned, or threatened. Having your most valued beliefs, such as religion, race, or socio-economic status ridiculed is also a factor in verbal abuse.

Sexual abuse includes being forced to engage in unwanted sexual activity.

21% to 53% of college students have experienced at least one incident of dating violence. 60% of acquaintance rapes on college campuses occur in casual or steady dating relationships.

An estimated 5% of college women experience a completed or attempted rape in a given year. In the United States, a rape is reported about once every five minutes.

17.7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape.

44% of victims of sexual assault are under age % of sexual assault and rape victims are under age % if juvenile sexual assault victims know their attacker.

Sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with 54% still being left unreported. Factoring in unreported rapes, only about 3% of rapists ever serve a day in jail.

Women, men, and children are all affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.
