Prevention is essential To achieve our movement’s goal: END SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Background Result of the California RPE Capacity Building Plan Main goal: provide a state level analysis of current capacity and areas for additional training and support

Methodology 95% response to at least one survey 87% Prevention Coordinators 76% of Leadership (Executive Directors) Similar to 2010 survey based on 2007 & 2009 surveys

“Remarkable shift” Moving beyond raising awareness -> Shifting cultural norms and stopping rape

Defining prevention Three main ways in which CA RPE grantees defined their prevention work: 1. Raising awareness 2. Shifting rape culture 3. Stopping rape before it happens

Strategies

Bystander empowerment (17% difference) Engaging boys and men (16% difference) Engaging youth (14% difference)

Comprehensive services

Resources remain limited Limited number of funding sources for prevention work Difficulty in demonstrating outcomes Demonstrating high benefits of low cost prevention efforts
