T EACHERS Aims: to learn how to express regrets in English

Who was your favourite teacher at primary school? What can you remember about him/her? Why did you like him/her?

W ISH We use WISH to express regrets (kajanje): WISH + past tenses expresses regrets about the present. I wish I had more free time. = I’d like to have more free time at present. WISH + Past Perfect expresses regrets about the past. I wish we had gone to the party last night. = I regret we didn’t go to the party last night.

S HOULD We use should/shouldn’t + infinitive to suggest changes in the present. The classes should be smaller. We use should/shouldn’t + perfect infinitive to suggest changes in the past. I shouldn’t have gone to that school.

W RITE SENTENCES BEGINNING WITH I WISH … I don’t know many people (and I’m lonely). I don’t have a mobile phone (and I need one). Helen isn’t here (and I need to see her). It’s cold (and I hate cold weather). I live in a big city (and I don’t like it). I can’t go to the party (and I’d like to).

W RITE SENTENCES BEGINNING WITH I WISH … You have eaten too much and now you feel sick. There was a job advertised in the newspaper. You decided not to apply for it. Now you think that your decision was wrong. When you were younger, you never learned to play a musical instrument. Now you regret this. You painted the gate red. Now you think that red was the wrong colour. You are walking in the country. You’d like to take some photographs, but you didn’t bring your camera.
