Presentation transcript:

Warm Up  Please grab a NOOK.  Then do the “Opener Comma” Exercises in your writer’s notebook. For the first one, if the sentence is correct, just write a C. If it’s wrong, rewrite the sentence and put the comma where it belongs.

Chapter 12 As you read…  Highlight for significant quotes. After the chapter, you will have time to fill in the chart and answer the questions.

Chapter 12 Journal & questions (15 minutes)  Complete the chart with two quotes from the chapter.  Then do the questions on the back.  Chapter Twelve Questions:  Who do you believe killed the man and the boy who decided to leave the village? Was it the rebels or the soldiers, in order to make a point? Explain your answer.  What is the significance of Beah’s music being destroyed in this chapter?  The boys were trained to be soldiers with this mantra: Visualize the enemy, the rebels who killed you parents, your family, and those who are responsible for everything that has happened to you. Why was this training so effective?

Chapter 13 with Patterned Reading Journal  Write a 3-4 sentence gist for the chapter, including a description of the characters, setting, and plot.   Discuss two Significant Moments with TEXT EVIDENCE:  The MOOD that Beah is trying to create through his description of the setting.  Moments that convey characterization (focus on personality/roles, NOT physical descriptions)  Important interactions and relationships between characters or conflicts.  Write one paragraph about specific examples of the Author’s Craft. Your paragraph should focus on ONE technique used by Beah to make the novel interesting or impactful. Possible techniques to examine include diction, imagery, figurative language, syntax, etc. Be sure to give specific examples from the text. The paragraph should be at least 4 sentences long.

Chapter 14 As you read…  Highlight for author’s craft & theme.

Theme: Chapter 14  As a table, come up with a thematic statement for Chapter 11 of A Long Way Gone.  Consider these topics to help you:  War, Death, Isolation, Fear, Loss of Innocence, Trauma, Hope, Survival, Humanity  Remember, thematic statements are significant messages about the world and they are universal.  Ex: Losing one’s sense of humanity is worse than death.

Author’s Craft: Chapter 14  Each one of you is responsible for writing a paragraph about the author’s craft. Follow the directions on your Patterned Reading Journal handout. You will include information about THEME this time.  Find a significant quote and identify the DEVICE that Beah is using.  Ex: Metaphor, personification, characterization, a _________ tone, diction, etc.  Your first sentence of your paragraph will look like this:  Beah uses [insert device here] in order to convey [insert theme here].  The rest of your paragraph will explain (with text support) how Beah uses that particular device to convey your group’s theme.

Final Exam Review 4. In paragraph 8, the author uses a metaphor that suggests both — a.material wealth and a lack of freedom b.intellectual passion and a feeling of regret c.natural beauty and a sense of order d.perpetual loneliness and a desire for knowledge
