Building the Canal Tunnel between Folkstone, England and Coquelles, France was the biggest European engineering project in history.

The Tunnel was first suggested in 1802 but only in the 1880s a start was made. But two world wars made the Tunnel dangerous for Britain and the country preferred to be safe from the Europe.

The final building of the tunnel began in The “Channel”, as it is commonly known, was opened on 6 May 1994.

It was achieved by using high-tech drilling equipment, workers bored though the ground from both ends.

Channel Tunnel, also called Eurotunnel, is of great importance. It links Great Britain and mainland Europe, and also is used for both freight and passenger traffic. The tunnel is the largest undersea tunnel in the world.
