Location This is Oldham. Oldham is a large town in Greater Manchester, South of Rochdale, North East of Manchester, and lies amid the Pennines. The Pennines a small range of mountains which are close to the rivers Irk and Medlock. It is easily accessible by the main motorways and makes it a great place to live – near the countryside, but also close to the major city of Manchester.

History Oldham was a part of Lancashire once; now it is part of Greater Manchester. Oldham rose to prominence in the 19 th century because it was an international centre of textile manufacturing. It was also famous for the cotton mills it had in the area. The coat of arms has a few characters such as 2 griffins, 1 owl, a scroll which says Sapere Aude (which means dare to be wise) and a knight’s helmet. Under the helmet is a shield with 3 owls 3 circles and a wavy line which looks like a mountain. Oldham’s old name was actually called Owl –ham which is why there are owls on the shield. Place of intrest Dovestone Reservoir. Dovestone Reservoir is found in Greenfield, if you go there you might see some ducks and Canadian Geese. Alexandra Park is in the Glodwick area in Oldham; it was made to commemorate the marriage of Albert (Prince of Wales) and Alexandra of Denmark. St. Joseph’s At St. Joseph’s the teachers get special visitors to come to the school such as The Welsh Birds of Prey Centre. Mr. Dickinson decided to make a Peace Garden. It is almost finished and it looks good. In the centre of the Peace Garden is a Peace Pole. It has the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” translated into Polish, French and Urdu. St. Joseph’s has many after school clubs such as music clubs, football and netball. The school’s uniform’s colours are: yellow, white, brown, light blue and black/grey. When it is a holy celebration the school goes to church where the Priest, Father John, performs the holy mass
