The Last Supper Lesson outcome: By the end of this lesson we will be able to: list the key features of the Last Supper. explain the symbolism of the bread and wine. interpret Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’ portrait. Lesson objective: Today we are learning about the last time Jesus and his disciples ate a meal together.  Hepworth 2005

The story of the Last Supper Jesus had to be careful as the Roman authorities were now watching his every move. When evening came, Jesus and his disciples met in an upper room at a friend’s house in Jerusalem to share the Passover meal.

The story of the Last Supper

Jesus washes the disciple’s feet Jesus does this to show the disciples how they must act once Jesus has gone. By washing their feet he teaches the disciples that they must serve one another.

Jesus suddenly spoke, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me here tonight.” The disciples felt shocked to hear this and one by one they said to him, “Surely it isn’t me, Lord?” Can you imagine how they felt after following him for three years and giving up everything for him – to be accused of betraying him to the Romans.

The bread and wine Whilst they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it in half and said, “Take, this is my body broken for you.”

Then he took a cup of red wine and said, “This is my blood, poured out for many.” He offered them the cup and they all passed it around and drank from it. The disciples had seen Jesus share bread and wine before but they had never heard him speak words like this before.

What do you think these words mean? “Take, this is my body broken for you.”

What do you think these words mean? “This is my blood, poured out for many.”

The meaning of these words: Jesus was trying to tell them that this would be the last time they ate together. He knew that very soon he would be killed. He was asking them, whenever they shared this meal again in the future, to remember him.

Judas Iscariot Judas was one of the twelve disciples and was very politically motivated. He had long wished that Jesus would prove to the Jewish leaders that he was the Messiah. He was becoming increasingly anxious for everyone to know who Jesus was – and who he believed Jesus to be. Judas had secretly been to visit the Jewish leaders to arrange for them to meet with Jesus.

Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da Vinci is a famous artist who painted ‘The Last Supper’ is one of the most famous pictures in the world The original fresco is on a wall of the dining hall in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy.

Information about Da Vinci’s painting: The painting depicts the very moment that Jesus has said to his disciples: The disciples are all reacting in horror to the thought that someone at that table would betray their master. Now when the evening came, he sat down with the twelve. As they ate, he said, “I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.” And they were really sorrowful, and each one began to say to Jesus, ‘Lord, is it I?’ And he answered and said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. --Matthew 26
