What is the Music Industry? Definition:Musical- Performance Composition Distribution Promotion Production Training/education Record Labels Recording Studios Live Music Venues, Equipment Manufacturing Rental Repair Retail

 US revenue of just over $27.5 Billion in 2008  Was $38.6 Billion in 1999  25% drop in 9 years.

Musical Performance A.K.A., “Musicians,” Can be either solo, instrumental, or in a band.

Examples of musicians:

“Pop Music” A.K.A., “Popular Music:” Music attempted for/accepted by a wide, modern audience.

What is “accepted” by wide audiences today? Inoffensive lyrics Heterosexual love dilemmas Simple, “sing-songy” melodies Government has control on what is “appropriate” to the general audience, due to censorship. “Pop Music”

SoundExchange Program in which musical artists and broadcasters sign onto, but eventually leads to the government getting their money through “royalty fees.” -Example of how government makes money off of artists and music companies.

THEREFORE, the government can, in a sense, interfere with the success and failure of individual musicians by deciding what is “popular,” and gain money from those companies who benefit in return, due to their connection to those very companies. “Pop Music”

Musical Composition Those who compose/write music, either for them selves or for others.

Censorship Definition: “The practice of officially examining books, movies, music, etc., and suppressing unacceptable parts.”

Censorship and the government: Government controls censorship Censorship decides what’s appropriate for listeners to hear Censorship=keeps from completely maintaining the U.S. right to Freedom of Speech. Censorship

Music Distribution How music gets to being sold-in stores, online, etc.

Effect of online distribution

Music Promotion Promoting artists &/or, as well as organize and book bands for shows.

Advertising Form of Music Promotion Further helps chosen acts that fund government to succeed in music industry through constant advertisement

Production Process of creating a recorded music project, managing every aspect.

Training/Educati on Training and educating individuals and groups of people ion all aspects of the music industry

College is Kind of a scam for musical performers For musicians, spending thousands of dollars to get a degree for something that doesn’t require one makes no sense. Performing skills aren’t necessarily taught

Thank You, Have a Nice day THE END
