Animal Room Exposure Risks for Facilities Personnel Dorcas O’Rourke, DVM, MS, DACLAM Attending Veterinarian, ECU

Three types of concerns when entering an animal room Does the animal/experiment pose a risk to me? Does the animal/experiment pose a risk to me? Do I pose a risk to the animal? Do I pose a risk to the animal? Is there a risk of spreading disease to other animals in the facility? Is there a risk of spreading disease to other animals in the facility?

Risks to me Disease potential from the animal Disease potential from the animal Monkey Herpes B virus Monkey Herpes B virus Disease potential from experimental hazards Disease potential from experimental hazards Biohazards Biohazards Radiological Hazards Radiological Hazards Chemical hazards Chemical hazards

Biosafety 3 Level Laboratory Utilizes Homeland Security select agent (Brucella spp), a bacteria Utilizes Homeland Security select agent (Brucella spp), a bacteria Entry requires FBI background check, approved card access OR escort by someone with appropriate credentials Entry requires FBI background check, approved card access OR escort by someone with appropriate credentials ALL guests must be signed in and out of the lab at each visit ALL guests must be signed in and out of the lab at each visit The BSL3 area is located inside the barrier, which is designated health status 0 The BSL3 area is located inside the barrier, which is designated health status 0

Do I Pose a Risk to the Animals? Certain diseases are transmissible from humans to animals Certain diseases are transmissible from humans to animals –Tuberculosis: Entry into monkey rooms requires a current negative PPD test by Prospective Health

Do I Pose a Risk to the Animals? –Measles: Do not enter monkey room if you or a family member has measles (poses a deadly threat to monkeys)

Do I Pose a Risk to the Animals? Influenza: Do not enter ferret room if you have the flu Influenza: Do not enter ferret room if you have the flu

Is there a risk of me spreading disease from animal to animal? Various levels of containment of disease risks Various levels of containment of disease risks Cage Cage Room Room Facility Facility

Rodent Room Order Entry  Rodent rooms are designated health status 0-5, with 0 being cleanest and 5 being dirtiest; currently in place for mice only  People movement is always from 0 to 5 (cleanest to dirtiest)  Once in a room designated with a 1, cannot go back to a room designated a 0; once in a room designated with a 2, cannot go back to either a 0 or a 1, etc.  Health status for the room is posted on the door

Room Entry Order ? If you enter this room, what numbered room(s) can you enter afterwards? In what order should you proceed? If you enter this room, what numbered room(s) can you enter afterwards? In what order should you proceed?

You may enter a room with the same or higher number designation. You should move from the lowest number (3) to the highest (5).

Room Entry Order ? You need to work in each of these rooms. Which do you enter first?

Protection at the Cage or Rack Level

Protection at the Room Level

Protection at the Facility Level Mouse Barrier Facility (LSB 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117,118, 119, and 120). No entry is allowed without Dale Aycock’s authorization. Do not enter rooms labeled as “quarantine” without Dale Aycock’s authorization. Do not enter rooms labeled as “quarantine” without Dale Aycock’s authorization.

The Human Factor Remember….When you have to enter more than one room in the animal facility, plan ahead to determine the best order of entry in order to prevent cross contamination.
