Denotation- Definition Refers to the literal meaning of a word, the "dictionary definition."

Denotation - Monkey The denotation for monkey is any mammal of the order Primates, including the guenons, macaques, langurs, and capuchins, but excluding humans, the anthropoid apes, and, usually, the tarsier and prosimians.

Denotation - Snake The denotation for snake is any of numerous scaly, legless, sometimes venomous reptiles having a long, tapering, cylindrical body and found in most tropical and temperate regions.

Connotation - Definition The suggested or implied meanings associated with a word beyond its dictionary definition. The meaning that a word suggests or implies. A connotation includes the emotions or associations that surround a word.

Connotation - Animal The connotation of calling someone an animal can be taken as telling them that they eat messy or have bad hygiene.

Connotation - Monkey

So the word monkey can have various connotation meanings. When you are upset with someone and want to call him names, would you call him "a monkey?" To call an adult a monkey is usually an insult. Does the word connote racism, or can "calling someone a monkey" be construed as a racial slur against any particular racial group? To call a small child a monkey is usually a term of affection So the word monkey can have various connotation meanings.  

The connotations for the word snake could includes the feelings of evil or danger. The word home is defined as where one lives but by connotation it also could mean safety, security, love and comfort or in other cases the opposite.
