Level #2 - Processing Analyze Compare Contrast Group Infer Sequence Synthesize

Analyze the Role of the Chess Game Chess is a game of thought, strategy and careful foresight. Mr. White plays the game recklessly and shows he lacks these qualities. The game also sets the reader up for the more serious game that the White’s will become involved in, a game of changing fate.

Contrast Mr. White and Morris Comfortable A family man Henpecked Not well-traveled Inexperienced Naïve Sargeant-Major Morris Adventuresome Unattached to family Independent Well-traveled Very experienced Wise

Give the Sequence of the Use of Fire in the Story The fire is keeping the family warm and comfortable as the story opens. Morris enters this world and sits by the fire. Morris throws the paw on the fire.

Give the Sequence of the Use of Fire in the Story Mr. White grabs it out. The small fire in the pipes of Herbert and Mr. White represent their thoughts. Mrs. White alludes to the coldness of the grave (the absence of the family’s hearth).

Give the Sequence of the Use of Fire in the Story The small candle lights up the demand for a another wish by Mrs. White. The paw is on the fireplace mantle. As Mr. and Mrs. White waited, the candle flame flickered and then died.

Give the Sequence of the Use of Fire in the Story In bed again and anxious in the darkness, Mr. White gets up and strikes a match. When the match goes out he strikes another as he hears the knock on the door. The matches fall from his hand.

Give the Sequence of the Use of Fire in the Story The rest of the story is in darkness as Mrs. White runs to the door, and Mr. White gropes in the darkness for the paw. It’s a cold empty wind that enters the house when Mrs. White opens the door. The last image is of a street lamp flickering.

Analyze the Symbol of Fire Fire is the symbol for fate. When we use fire respectfully, it has great value. It warms us, cooks our food and heats our water. It provides light in the darkness and creates a safe and warm mood.

Analyze the Symbol of Fire When we are careless with fire it can burn and destroy. Fire has the potential to destroy lives and all possessions. Fire is difficult to control when it gets out of hand, and has been the source of much damage throughout history.

Level #3 - Application Imagine Apply Evaluate Hypothesize Judge Predict Speculate

3 Wishes If you had three wishes (without the negative consequence of the monkey’s paw) what would those wishes be? Material possessions? Practical? Extravagant? For you or for others? Personal non-material things? Non-material things for others?

3 Wishes Wish #1 = A long life Wish #2 = Financial security for life Wish #3 = Health for my children

3 Wishes Now, look at your three wishes and imagine a negative consequence that could come as a result of them. Wish #1 = A long life All the sufferings that come with life could be overwhelming. I might live a long time but in poor health.

3 Wishes Wish #2 = Financial security for life How was the money made that brought this security? I might become obsessed with protecting my money or earning more? I might ignore all other aspects of life.

3 Wishes Wish #3 = Health for my children Will they appreciate what they have? Will they use that healthy life for good? They could still die by accident.

Keys Questions to Consider Had White not found the paw, what would have happened? What roles do fate and free will play in your life? Do you believe in magic, miracles or supernatural forces?
