Professor Rebecca Jester (Academic Lead)

 Need for Trust to have assurance that its Nursing workforce has appropriate evidence based knowledge of fundamental, compassionate and safe care.  To prepare the nursing workforce for the NMC requirements of re-validation.  To develop a user friendly one-stop learning resource, minimising duplication of effort and minimising time away from direct clinical care

 Successful bid to HENW to support Phase 1  Phase 1 – build the learning platform (Totara), develop the learning content with integral assessment, pilot the learning resource with a sample of RN’s (adult) working within PAT and The Christie.  The sample will comprise circa 10% of the adult nursing workforce in both organisations using a stratified sampling matrix.  Completion of Phase 1 by 31 st March 2015

 The e-learning resource is structured into 3 modules:  1. Recognition and Management of the Deteriorating Adult.  2. Care of Older People in Acute Hospital Settings.  3. Evidence Based Acute Medical and Surgical Nursing Care.

 Aim- Phase 1  To develop and pilot an on-line learning and assurance tool to support nurses to develop and maintain up to date knowledge on contemporary nursing best practice in fundamental, safe and compassionate care.

 The modules and the subjects within them are based on views of Senior Nurses within the Trust and across other Trusts in Greater Manchester obtained using survey monkey questionnaires; patient feedback data, Nursing Metrics Data and National policy and directives.  The academic lead is working with Subject Matter Experts, V-Care Education Team, E-Learning and Library Team to ensure the learning resources are evidence based and easy to use.

 Each module begins with a pre-test – MCQs testing each of the learning outcomes.  If the participant answers all MCQ questions correctly there will be no requirement for them to access the learning resources and they will be issued with a completion certificate.

 Those that do not pass all questions within the pre-test will be directed to tutorials linked to the subject they have answered incorrectly. Participants will then be required to re-take a post tutorial test only for subjects or parts of subjects they answered incorrectly.  The process will enable participants to have 3 attempts at the post tutorial questions.

 If a participant does not pass the post tutorial tests after 3 attempts their line manager and Learning & Organisational Development Team will be notified to work with the individual to develop a learning plan with re-testing.

 We will have a more accurate picture following the pilot which will have a built in evaluation questionnaire, but we anticipate 2-10 hours per nurse annually.  We aim to minimise duplication of effort, so requirements for knowledge based mandatory training will be included in relevant learning resources.

 A questionnaire was distributed via survey monkey to Senior Nurses within PAHT and across Greater Manchester to confirm the subjects to be included with the programme. (49 responses) High level of agreement  A sampling matrix has been developed to identify the sample needed for the Pilot AND Senior Nurses have helped us identify potential participants for the pilot.  A proposed structure for the resource has been developed.

 The academic lead, E-learning and Library Team have worked with SMEs relevant to both Trusts to develop the learning outcomes, resources and MCQs.  An evaluation strategy for the pilot is being developed.  Your local IT team will be scoping the availability and readiness of PCs in the clinical areas to ensure easy access to V-Care.  John and the E-Learning Team at PAHT are working with Synergy to install and develop the Totara platform.

 Identified SMEs  Agree aims for all 3 modules  Most of the learning outcomes have been written and agreed (except discharge planning)  We are developing questions for each Learning Outcome - 4 per outcome  We are collating learning resources and reviewing them for quality and ease of use  Identified and scoped the pilot areas
