Sing, dance, and jump are all verbs. Verbs usually show actions. They show what someone or something is doing.
Jake eats pizza.
Jameicia opens a present.
Can you tell which word is the verb? Charlie draws a dinosaur for the class.

STOP Which word is the verb? Lisa eats a banana. The monkey slips on the banana peel.
Verbs are in every sentence. No matter how short or how long, every sentence will have a verb.
STOP Can you find the verb? Run! The elephant and the goat drank the water from the gray bucket after the circus show.
Verbs can tell about things that are happening right now. They can also tell about things that happened before.
We say that an action that is happening right now is in the present. I am typing right now. I am typing in the present.
Read each sentence. These sentences tell about things that are happening right now, in the present.
Today I dance. Conrad dances with me. Jordan jumps and yells. Emmaly twirls around. * Some present verbs end in “s” and some don’t.
STOP Which verb is in the present, happening right now. Ormond’s float (win, wins) the blue ribbon at the parade.
Brionna (dance, dances) with me. We (eat, eats) dinner together.
These verbs are in the past. These events already happened. Yesterday I danced. We ate dinner last night.
You can change most verbs from the present to the past by adding “ed” to the end. laugh = laughed climb = climbed
STOP Change each present tense verb to the past tense by adding “ed” at the end. She walks to school. I watch TV after school.
But some verbs don’t follow the rules. Some verbs are tricky. Try making up sentences using these tricky verbs.
