Reading Kits for ESL By Isabelle Rodrigue and Valérie Samson

1. The Making of... How the idea came about. –Inspired by Isabelle Rompré and Myriame Larose from Harwood School (CSTL)

2. Objectives We wanted ESL students to: –Bring a bit of English home. –Discover English literature. –Involve parents in the learning of English. –Continue ESL learning at home by having fun. –Motivate students to try and read in English.

3. Bringing the Project to Life. Finding a teaching partner! Proposal to your principal. –Budget: books, laminating, dry erase markers, dice, libération, bags, cardstock, colour photocopy budget.

4. Living It! 1.Prepare and send a letter to parents 2.Assemble kits and label everything. 3.Choose 1 group in which you feel comfortable. Add other groups later on. 4.Explain how the kits work to the student: Rules of use Return schedule 5.Set-up a class borrowing list. 6.Make sure to replenish each kit and verify material each time.

5. Possible « After life » Scenarios 1. Form small class workgroups to help create new activities. 2. Trade kits with a colleague in another school. 3. Literature night/literature afternoon during a special event(ex: cultural week, literacy week, etc.) 4. Invite parents in class and share books. 5. Use as a reward to students. 6.If you choose not to send them home, they can be used a free time activity (library corner).
