Presentation transcript:

The color wheel is a chart for organizing colors. It helps use mix colors and make new ones. In this class we will deal with a 12-color wheel. Black and white do not belong on the wheel because they are not colors. On the back of your sheet. Fill in the colors and label them as we go along with oil pastels.

White light is composed of different wavelengths. A prism can separate light into these wavelengths. In this sense, white is the addition of all colors, and black is the absence of color. When we see color, we see certain wavelengths in light reflected back to our rod and cones in our eyes. When we wee something white, all wavelengths are being reflected back to our eyes. When we see black no wavelengths are being reflected. Black and white are not colors. Color is a sensation. Its our eyes reaction to wavelengths of light.

Hue is the name of the color blue Saturation is how intense is the color is. The more colors you mix with it, the less intense it gets. Intense not very intense Value is how light or dark the color is (think about if you were to photocopy it)

First are the primary colors- red, yellow and blue. in theory, they make all other colors. They are placed equally apart on the color wheel. Yellow is always at the top, because it has the lightest value.

Then there are the secondary colors - orange, green, and violet. You get them when you mix two primary colors together. They are placed equally apart on the color wheel. Violet is always at the bottom, because it has the darkest value.

Finally there are the tertiary or intermediate colors. They are yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red- violet, red-orange, and yellow-orange. You can make them from mixing a primary and a secondary color.

Everything you wanted to know about The Color Wheel On your paper you have a blank American flag. Color it in like this, using colored pencils or markers:

You just experienced how the eye sees colored. Your rods and cones in your eyes get oversaturated with a color, so they shift to the opposite color to balance it. Jasper Johns image at the right. uses this concept to reveal a hidden flag. Stare at the white dot in the top flag for 30 seconds (no blinking!) and then shift your eyes down to the blank square.
