WHY REFERENCE? ACADEMIC HONESTY Avoid plagiarism MORAL RIGHTS Avoid breaking copyright law Referencing allows the reader to verify quotations. Referencing enables the reader to follow-up and read more fully the cited author's arguments.
DEFINITION the act of presenting another’s work or ideas as your own. synonyms: copying, infringement of copyright, piracy, theft, stealing, poaching, appropriation It can be DELIBERATE or ACCIDENTAL How to avoid plagiarising: Take clear, accurate notes about where you found specific ideas Record complete citation information for each item Use quotation marks
WHAT TO REFERENCE X ✓ Your own independent material. Common knowledge (e.g. standard information, folk literature, common sense observations ). Someone else’s independent material. Facts or ideas from signed or copyrighted sources, (e.g. book, letter, magazine, newspaper, film, speech, interview, television program, or internet based material). Table or diagram created by another writer.
