Evaluating Online Sources

Preferences 1.Always keep your purpose in mind. Example: If you’re researching gun control, go to the National Rifle Association (NRA).

2. Favour Governmental and Educational Sources over Commercial Look for.org,.edu, and.gov extensions. Notice the absence of ads on the site. But be aware that all of these may have their own agenda. Example: Government site may skew to Liberal or Conservative policies.

3. Favour sites with authors named. You can check credentials of the writer. * him or her. * Google search the author. * Look in the university databases. They accept responsibility for the content.

4. When was site last updated? Indicates whether or not the information is current. Also shows that the owners of the site are taking responsibility for the site by maintaining it.

5. Check for documentation. Look for a bibliography. Look for supporting evidence.
