Finding Full-Text Journal Articles
What it is and How to Identify Peer Reviewed Articles
Presentation transcript:

King’s College Library Finding a Print Journal Article

Advantages of Print Journals The library’s print journals are excellent resources for medical students, but most are not available in electronic form. The print format may be easier to read. You can hold the entire issue in your hand and skim quickly. Your instructor may require a print journal.

The library has the following Medical journals in print : American Journal of Nursing CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) JAAPA (Journal of Amer. Ass. of Phys. Assist.) JAMA (Journal of Amer. Med. Assoc.) Journal of AHIMA Nursing Nurse Educator Nursing Made Incredibly Easy* Patient Care Pharmacy Times* RN *To find articles in these journals, see “Publications not in a Database” beginning with Slide 18.

Back issues are kept in the Medical area in alphabetical order by journal title, then by date. All journals are kept at least 5 years. This means there are more than 500 issues of journals. How do you find the one that has an article on your topic?

Databases to the Rescue!! A search of the databases will bring up the journal name and issue date for an article on a given topic. With this information, we can find the one issue we want out of the 500+ on the shelf.

The library staff will be glad to help you find a print journal article. OR View the following slides to learn how to find print journal articles on your own.

Go to Enter the username and password under “Search Databases.” (Get from library staff) Search Databases Submit Click “Submit.”

At the next screen, click on the first icon. Click to connect. LIRN (Library & Information Resources Network Find Infotrac and click Connect to Infotrac. Scroll down till you find the stethoscope: Health Reference Center Academic

Click on “Advanced Search.” Advanced Search

Type your topic into the keyword box. Keyword Search Scroll down near the bottom and click on “Browse Publication Title.” Browse Publication Title

Type the name of the first journal you want to search and click “GO.” At this point we are searching for names of journals, not a research topic. Here we can select the titles of the library’s print journals and limit our search to just those publications. List of Print Journals American Journal of Nursing JAAPA JAMA Nursing Patient Care RN GO

Check the box beside the journal name to select it. It will then appear in the box on the left hand side. Follow the same steps for each title you want to include.

* Including too many titles may cause the search to time out. The best ones are JAAPA, JAMA, Nursing, Patient Care & RN. If your topic is a very common one like diabetes, you may exclude JAMA. When finished selecting titles, click “Submit.” Submit

Clicking “Submit” will take you back to the search screen. Click Search.

The first screen of results for the search for “osteoarthritis” is shown below.

Publications Not Included in any Database Nursing Made Incredibly Easy Pharmacy Times Since these journals are not included in any of the library’s subscription databases, the library enters the main article titles for each issue, along with the journal name and date, into the library catalog.

The following slides will show how to find articles in these journals. Click on the Library icon on the desktop of any computer on campus. (Bottom left of desktop.) Click on the blue link for “King’s College Library.”

Click on the “Catalog” tab as shown. Click on the “Power” tab. Power Search

At this screen we have entered “hypertension” as our keyword search term. We have clicked on the dropdown arrow for “Material Type” and limited our search to Serial. Limit search to serial-- includes journals

The results of our search are shown below. We see 2 issues of Nursing Made Incredibly Easy and 2 of Pharmacy Times. We will click on the first one, Nursing Made Incredibly Easy published in 2004.

We see “hypertension” listed in the contents. Under “Publication Info” we see that the month is March/April. Search term appears in contents. Date of the issue we want to find.

To find this issue on the shelf : Go the “Medical Journals” section of Periodical Backfiles. Find Nursing Made Incredibly Easy in its place alphabetically. Find the year 2004, then look for the March/April issue.

Open the cover to the table of contents to find the page number for the article on hypertension. The article on hypertension is on Page 12.

Photocopy the article. Be sure to write down all the information you need for your Reference list. After photocopying, place the journal in the Book Return slot.

By taking advantage of all the library’s print journals, you can turn in a paper you will be proud of!
