Mark 4:35-41 35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him

Luke 8:22-25 22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. 23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. 24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25; Matt. 8:23 Observations: Few things terrify man more than being in a storm and totally at the mercy of the elements. Sailors tell of having to be strapped to bunks during storms at sea to keep from washing onto the deck and overboard.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM Imagine being caught at sea when a storm arises and in spite of all you can do you cannot get away from it. Facts about the area: 1. Geography of area lends itself to sudden storms. Sea of Galilee is 680 feet below sea level. It is warmer at the surface than its higher surroundings with steep cliffs ranging from 300 to 1000 feet high on the east and Mt Hermon to the north. The mountain passes create a natural funnel for the wind. There literally “came down a storm” Lk. 8:23. It was a furious storm.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM This event depicts the humanity and deity of Jesus. The account: Boat was covered with waves and water was entering the boat faster than they could bail it out. They were in real jeopardy of sinking or capsizing. JESUS WAS SLEEPING.

THE HUMANITY OF JESUS He Hungered (Matt. 4:2) He Thirsted (Jn. 4:7; 19:28) He Grew Weary (Jn. 4:6) He Sorrowed (Jn. 11:35) He Slept (Mk. 4:38) He really experienced these human attributes. He Knew what it was like to have a hectic day

“Carest Thou Not That We Perish?” Experienced sailors were scared. Fear overcame faith as they cried, “Master, Master!” “Carest thou not that we perish?” WHAT A QUESTION! These same people had witnessed so many of his great works. What they would see soon would shame them for asking such a question. How could Jesus sleep? He has a total absence of fear and complete trust in His Father who was in charge. Others trusted in own talents and skills as sailors- not in the One who made the sea.

DID THEY HAVE FAITH? What good is our faith if one loses it instead of using it? The storm blew away their faith. If we cannot lay hold of our faith when we need it most, what value is it? DID THEY REALLY HAVE FAITH? DO YOU? Phil. 4:7- speaks of “the peace that passes all understanding” that is a blessing for all Christians. Do you have it?

How Strong Is Our Faith Paul’s faith sustained him through many trials (2Cor. 11:25- thrice beaten w/rods-READ; Acts 28) Jesus did not accuse his followers of having no faith He asked, “Where is your faith?” (Lk. 8:25) and “why are you fearful, o ye of little faith” (Matt. 8:26) They forgot everything in a moment of panic and did not posses the same peace and serenity as Jesus showed.

“PEACE- BE STILL” These words mean nothing if spoken by a mere man. The man who spoke these words was Immanuel (God with us) Is.7:14 He was directly involved in every aspect of creation (Col. 1: 15-17- in Him were all things created). The worlds were framed by God’s Word (Heb. 11:3) “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth were all the host of them…for He spoke and is was done, He commanded and it stood fast” (Ps. 33:6,9). All this done by the power of His spoken Word.

The Power of the Spoken Words Of Jesus “Lazarus, Come Forth” (Jn. 11:43,44) He arose from the dead. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” (Mk. 16:16) His Word is the Power of God unto salvation to all who believe (Rom. 1:16). Like all miracles, the result of this one was instant. Matthew and Mark say it was calm.

“What Manner of Man Is This…” They were amazed and astonished Matt. 8:27- “even the winds and the sea obey him.” Had trouble understanding how a man could do this. They are slowly seeing that Christ is more than just a mere man. All of God’s creation subject to His rebuke. Jesus calmed the storm and also their hearts. He Validated Ps. 104:5,8,9- “When at his rebuke the waters fled.” Conclusion- Jesus is Deity

LESSONS TO BE LEARNED Sometimes Jesus calms the person, and sometimes He calms the storms. It is His choice and we must trust His judgment. Sin brought fear into the world (Gen. 3:10) Genuine faith and love can dispel fear, like light dispels darkness (Matt. 8:26; 1 Jn. 4:18- no fear in love, perfect love casts out fear) Satan wants us to be scared and feel we have nowhere to turn like it is all in our hands.

MORE LESSONS Acceptable faith is more than acknowledging the power and existence of God. It includes our total trust, reliance and commitment to Him as a “rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” Jesus can protect us also in the storms of life. His written Word is as powerful as his spoken Word (Jn. 20:30,31). All of us are voyagers on the sea of life and storms will come. Regardless of the storm in your life, Jesus is There with you to help you (Rom. 8:31; Phil. 4:13; Mt. 28:20) If the winds and waves obey him, shouldn’t we?

IT IS NO SECRET WHAT GOD CAN DO The chimes of time, ring out the news; another day is thru Someone slipped and fell, Was that someone you? You may have longed for added strength, your courage to renew; Do not be disheartened, for I bring hope to you. It is no secret what God can do, What He’s done for others, He’ll do for you With arms wide open, He’ll pardon you. It is no secret what God can do. (It Is No Secret, Stuart Hamblen)
