Popular opinion in Jesus day: These were more evil than others, hence their suffering. (Jn. 9:1-3; Job 4:7) Eliphaz (Job’s friend) answered and said: Job 4:7 “Remember now, who ever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright ever cut off? John 9:1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. M 18

Another example of this mentality (Acts 28:3-4) People today call this Karma In Luke 13:1-5, Jesus emphasizes the absolute necessity of repentance for all. Acts 28:3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 So when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live.” H1H1

Luke 13:1-5 (NKJV) 1 There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” O4O4

In Luke 13 Jesus refutes this common idea 3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” OrRepent Perish A 10 5

Thayer: “to incur the loss of eternal life…to be delivered up to eternal misery.” Vine: “the idea is not extinction, but ruin, loss- not of being, but of well-being. Used of the loss of well-being of the unsaved in eternity (Matt. 25:41) Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: S6S6 6

It is God’s desire that we repent! (2 Pet. 3:9) When we understand the meaning of “perish” we see the imperative need of repentance. “Repentance” is a prominent Biblical theme. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. C 19

Taught by God’s prophets to Israel Jeremiah 25:5 They said, ‘Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings, and dwell in the land that the L ORD has given to you and your fathers forever and ever. Ezekiel 18:30 “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord G OD. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. A 16 8

Taught by Christ and His Apostles Mark 6:12 So (the Apostles) they went out and preached that people should repent. Acts 17:30 (Paul to the people of Athens) Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, Matthew 4:17 (Jesus beginning His Galilean ministry) From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” A 17

Luke 24:46 (Jesus appearing to the apostles after His death) Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. Acts 2:38 Then Peter (in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost) said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. C 20 10

Fear. (Acts 24:24-27) Acts 24:24 And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. 25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.” 27 But after two years Porcius Festus succeeded Felix; and Felix, wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul bound. R 14 11

Conviction of guilt. (Acts 2:37-38) A person may have a brief moment of guilt, only soon after to move past that feeling. Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. E 13

Regret for wrong-doing. (Matt. 27:3) Matthew 27:3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” 5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. E9E9 13

Sorrow. (2 Cor. 7:10) – Some are sorry because they got caught. – Some are sorry because of humiliation. – Some are made sorry because of the penalties. 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. E5E5

Mere reformation of one’s life. (Ezek. 14:6) Repentance leads to reformation. Some reform for other reasons. – Addict might reform for health reasons – A gambler might reform for financial reasons – An adulterer might reform to save his/her marriage Ezekiel 14:6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord G OD : “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. G2G2 N 21

Confession. (Ex. 9:27; I Sam. 15:24) Some “confess” sin, but continue in it! – Announcement - “I’m sorry I am this way.” 27 And Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have sinned this time. The L ORD is righteous, and my people and I are wicked. 28 Entreat the L ORD, that there may be no more mighty thundering and hail, for it is enough. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.” 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet more; and he hardened his heart, he and his servants. N8N8 C 11

W. E. Vine  “to change one’s mind or purpose, always in the New Testament, involving a change for the better. Thayer  “to change one’s mind for the better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one’s past sins.” The elements of repentance: CONVICTION  GODLY SORROW  CHANGE OF MIND  REFORMATION OF LIFE. All of these must be present. N3N3

Repentance produces a radical change in one’s life. Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, Matthew 3:8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, Acts 26:20 but (Paul tells King Agrippa that he) declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. E7E7 18

A difficult commandment because it deals with the will of man: humility; self-examination; admission of guilt; a resolve to make amends. 2 Examples of repentance: – 1 Corinthians 6:9 – Acts 19:19 1 Corinthians 6:9 (abbreviated) Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. N 22

A difficult commandment because it deals with the will of man: humility; self-examination; admission of guilt; a resolve to make amends. 2 Examples of repentance: – 1 Corinthians 6:9 – Acts 19:19 Acts 19:18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.

The goodness of God. Rom. 2:4 The knowledge of coming judgment. Acts 17:30-31 Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” Romans 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? P 15 21

A time is coming when it will be too late! 2 Corinthians 6:2 For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Proverbs 1:24 Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, 27 When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28 “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. R 23 22

Puzzle Answer 2 Corinthians 7:11 For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter. Sincere Attitude Desire for forgiveness Anger over their own sins Horror of God’s wrath Longing for righteousness Enthusiasm for God’s work EVIDENCE OF REPENTANCE! 23

Now… Let’s talk about belief. Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

2 Thessalonians 1:7 when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

God is the Creator? Christ lived here and will return? There will be a judgment? There will be great book opened? Do you believe that your name is there? If not… – REPENT HERE – OR PERISH ETERNALLY IN THE HEREAFTER.
