Who is My Neighbor? Luke 10:25-37

“On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered: “’Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, and will all your mind’ and, ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” “But he wanted to justify himself,” So now, here’s the real issue… (Jesus took him up on it)

“Who is my neighbor - really ?”

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.”

“But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the inn- keeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘And when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you have.’”

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert of the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

“Who is my neighbor?” “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor…”

The Priest Primary Question: What do I need to do to stay clean? Faced with a problem he asks, “How do I stay clean?” He saw…he passed by on the other side

The Levite Primary Question: What does the law say I must do? Faced with a problem he asks, “Is it lawful?” He saw…he passed by on the other side

We may not be asking questions about staying clean or what is lawful, but what are the issues for us today? What keeps us from showing mercy?

The Samaritan Primary Question: What can I do to help? Faced with a problem he asks, “What would I want someone to do for me?” “Love your neighbor as yourself” “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” He saw…he took pity on him, he went to him, bandaged his wounds, took him to get additional help, paid for his care, and returned to check on him.

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor?” “The one who had mercy on him.” “Go and do likewise.”

Romans 13: 8-10 “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. The commandments, ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not covet,’ and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule; ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”

1 John 3: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but in actions and in truth.”

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor?” “The one who had mercy on him.”
