70 Mark Question Warm Up I am about to ask you what you need to to to answer a 70 mark question. You have never answered one of these. You need to think proactively and work out how you will go about finding out how to answer one before I ask you. You can ask to use any resource in this classroom. You have 7 minutes. Go. Now.

70 Mark Question Objectives That you are able to describe how to answer a 70 mark question. That you are capable of demonstrating some of the features of an excellent answer to a 70 mark question. Some of you might be able to demonstrate many of the features of an A grade answer.

70 Mark Question Homework – Due this time next week (You can get further help on Thursday and from the website). Complete the 70 mark question on the Gestapo. Annotate your answer to indicate where you think you have included key features of a 70 mark answer in your own answer.

70 Mark Question Intervention Hit List Have we let you down? We’ll sort it out on Thursdays, don’t worry. We will not give ourselves a Thursday off until we are confident that we’ve stopped letting people down.

70 Mark Question Step 1 Put the sources into two categories. Sources that support the hypothesis and sources that go against the hypothesis. This is what you had to do at GCSE in the surgery paper and therefore this is the sort of thing a C grade (A* at GCSE) might do. How can a B/A grade student show they are more complex?

70 Mark Question Step 2 – More than just two groups (A GRADE STUFF) Things are not always black and white. What are the key words from the question first? Use your own knowledge to assess how far the Sources support the interpretation that the Gestapo and the other security services were able to control the German population mainly because they were ‘all seeing and all knowing’.

So, how else might the Gestapo and other security services have been able to control the German population, other than being ‘all seeing and all knowing?’ Can you come up with a third grouping?

70 Mark Question Step 3 – More than just two groups (A GRADE STUFF) My groups: Support – Saw and knew about lots of different areas of German society. A different argument (against) – Were not able to control the population through seeing and knowing. Another different argument – Fear was more important than the ‘all seeing all knowing’ to control the population. So, which sources can help me to back up my four groupings?

70 Mark Question Step 3 pointer Can you indicate any sources that could be used as evidence for more than one side of the argument? This is one example of what an A grade student might do.

70 Mark Question Step 3 – More than just two groups (A GRADE STUFF) My groups: Support – Saw and knew about lots of different areas of German society. (Sources A, C, D, E) A different argument (against) – Were not able to control the population through seeing and knowing. (Sources B, C) Another different argument – Fear was more important than the all seeing all knowing to control the population. (Sources E, A, B) So what quotes from the sources would I have used as evidence for my four arguments?

70 Mark Question Just a thing to note. Don’t write sequentially. You need to use the sources together. ‘Similarly’, ‘likewise’ etc…should be used Can you CROSS REFERENCE any of the sources? E.g. do any of the points or pieces of evidence appear in more than one source? For example can what the historian in source E says, be backed up by what is said in another source? This is one example of what a B/A grade student might do.

70 Mark Question How to structure your answer. See the ‘how to’ sheet. See the mark scheme. See us on Thursday.

70 Mark Question Plenary Give me an example of something that you have spotted about the sources, in relation to the question, that you will be pleased about including in your answer. Begin to write your answer. An intro might indicate your groupings and what your conclusion might be – not too dissimilar to your medieval essay intro.
