False Grace (part 2d) All verses are from NKJV unless noted.

Previously: Nicolaism, seemingly that grace covers licentious pleasures (Rev. 2:6, 14, 15; 2:20, 21) Universalism, grace saves everyone Catholicism, grace dispensed by clergy through sacramental rites Calvinism, grace unalterably extended to the (unconditionally) predestined elect Continual Cleansing, the blood of Christ cleanses Christians even as they sin

GOSPEL/DOCTRINE DIVISION Gospel/Doctrine division (gospel important, doctrine unimportant, unity and diversity) Faith in death, burial and resurrection of Christ is the “core gospel” (1 Cor. 15:1-4) A Neo-Calvinistic infection Like justification by faith alone; gospel is death, burial, and resurrection alone Result: broadened fellowship & soft preaching

EXAMPLE OF THE DISEASE IN THE CHURCH Neo-Calvinism infection Gospel/Doctrine division (gospel important and defined as only death, burial and resurrection, anything else is doctrine and unimportant) Nehemias A. Hayuhay, “As I observed from our exchanges that you are more concern on MDR rather than DBR. Remember that the power of God for Salvation is the DBR (Gospel)” ( exchange, 3/25/04) Defines the “Gospel” too narrowly!

1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-4 AND THE GOSPEL? What were the Corinthians denying? □ The resurrection of Jesus Christ? □ The future bodily resurrection of Christians?

1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-4 AND THE GOSPEL? Denying the Christian’s bodily resurrection Paul begins his answer indirectly… They had heard and “received” the news of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection “I declared to you the gospel” (15:1) “which also you received” (15:1) “and in which you stand” (15:1) “I delivered to you first of all that which I also received” (15:3)

1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-4 AND THE GOSPEL? The rejection of the Christian’s resurrection was held by some (15:12) Was not DIRECTLY rejecting Jesus’ resurrection YET, in denying the resurrection one denies Jesus’ resurrection (15:13ff) “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits’” (15:33) is written in connection with a doctrinal perversion and not a moral one—it matters what we believe!

“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (1:3) In preaching the death of Christ (Dbr), the gospel charges man a sinner In denying the resurrection of Christ (dbR), the gospel condemns all are hopelessly lost under sin (15:17)

“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (1:3) Cannot preach the (D) & (R) of Christ without teaching the reason—SIN! The gospel therefore requires: calling down and identifying sin preaching on the consequences of sin showing man how to escape the eternal burden of sin

In charging Nehemias Hayuhay that he was teaching “another gospel” by advancing that “divorce” was not applicable in the Philippines, he responded: “You quoted Gal. 1:6-9 relating it to MDR. Can you prove it by context that MDR was what Paul was talking about that a certain people twisted? If you can not prove it BY CONTEXT then you are likewise guilty of twisting the scriptures.” ( , March 26, 2004)

What was the controversy addressed in Galatians? □ Rejecting “DBR” (Death, Burial and Resurrection)? □ A return to circumcision and the law of Moses? ANSWER: Galatians 5:1-11 POINT : pressing circumcision (a doctrine) = another gospel! Likewise: preaching error on MDR (marriage, divorce and remarriage) or any other doctrinal issue results in preaching another gospel!

NO “GOSPEL-DOCTRINE” DISTINCTION IN 1 ST CENTURY Acts 5:19, 20, “But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.” Was understood as “doctrine” “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!” (Acts 5:28)

NO “GOSPEL-DOCTRINE” DISTINCTION IN 1 ST CENTURY Acts 17:18, 19, “…Others said, ‘He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,’ because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, ‘May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?” Preaching Jesus and the resurrection was considered “DOCTRINE!”

NO “GOSPEL-DOCTRINE” DISTINCTION IN 1 ST CENTURY Romans 6:17, “But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.” Did the Romans obey “the gospel” or the “form of doctrine?” In obeying the “form of doctrine” they were obeying the gospel (Rom. 1:16; 10:15, 16)!

THEREFORE, THE D EATH, B URIAL, AND R ESURRECTION OF CHRIST REQUIRES Preaching against sin NBR – no believer’s resurrection (1 Cor. 15) NUR – no unbeliever’s resurrection (Jn. 5:28, 29) MDR – marriage, divorce, and remarriage (Matt. 19:9) MVR– murder, violence, and rebellion (Rom. 1:29, 30) PSR –profanity, slander, and reviling (2 Tim. 3:3; Eph. 4:29, 31)

THEREFORE, THE D EATH, B URIAL, AND R ESURRECTION OF CHRIST REQUIRES Preaching against sin DDR –drinking, drugs, and revelry (Gal. 5:20, 21; Rom. 13:13) GCR—gambling, covetousness, and robbery (Eph. 4:28; 1 Tim. 3:3) IIR c –immodesty, immorality, and rank conduct (Acts 15:29; 2 Cor. 12:21; 1 Tim. 2:9) And any other thing contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel (1 Tim. 1:10, 11)

“for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust” (1 Tim. 1:10, 11)

HENCE : John the forerunner taught against fornication (Mk. 6:18) Jesus the Christ taught against fornication (Matt. 19:9; Rev. 2:14, 20, 21) The apostles taught against fornication (Acts 15:20; 1 Cor. 5:1; 6:13; 7:2; 10:8; 2 Cor. 12:21; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 5:3; Col. 3:5; 1 Thess. 4:3; Rev. 9:21) True disciples will too (Phil. 4:9; 1 Cor. 4:16)

WHY DID THEY PREACH AGAINST IT? Because it is contrary to sound doctrine according to the blessed gospel! Because those who practice such can not inherit the kingdom of God Why do few preach against sin today?

WHEN THE CORINTHIANS RECEIVED THE DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION OF CHRIST The gospel required that they first learn and turn from sin (repent): 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor. 6:9-11) The gospel required that they first learn and turn from sin (repent): 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor. 6:9-11)

Cecil Willis “No sharp gospel-doctrine differentiation is found in the New Testament. The gospel is to be preached to both saints (Rom. 1:7,15,16) and sinners (Mk. 16:15,16). The doctrine is to be preached to both saints (1 Cor. 4:17; Col. 3:17; 2 Tim. 4:2; Acts 2:42) and to sinners (Rom. 6:17,18; Acts 5:28; 13:5,7,8,10,12; 17:19). In the New Testament, things which are in some places called ‘gospel’ are in other places called ‘doctrine’ (see Rom. 6:17,18 and 1 Cor. 15:1-4; Rom. 1:16). And that which matures the Christian is called both ‘gospel’ (Gal. 2:14; Eph. 6:15; 1 Tim. 1:10, 11) and ‘doctrine’ (Matt. 28:20; Acts 2:42).” Guardian of Truth, XXXVI: 1, pp , January 2, 1992

1.Will you “receive” the gospel in baptism today to be forgiven of “sins” (1 Cor. 15:1, 3; Acts 18:8)?  Repent and confess Christ?  Baptism? “For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son…” (Rom. 5:10) WHEN: “baptized into His death” (Rom. 6:3) 2.Will you hold fast to the gospel to remain saved (1 Cor. 15:2)?
