WWII The War (World)

What are “Marxists”? Marxists = Communists. Marx = Karl Marx

Nazis take over Europe After Poland, the Nazis take over most of the rest of Europe. Only France and England are left. Germany defeats France. This leaves England alone to fight the Germans.

Evacuation at Dunkirk British and some French escape from France and go back to England from Dunkirk

What Nazis do in conquered territory: Round up all of the Jews. Force people (mostly Jews and Slavs) to be slaves (they are forced to work in Nazi factories for free). Take all things that are valuable. Conduct experiments on prisoners. Some people in these countries help the Nazis. They are called collaborators.

Nazi occupation of France Many French are collaborators. A “puppet government” is set up in the city of Vichy. French in England are “Free French” they are led by Charles DeGaulle.

Review What was the German style of waging war during WWII called? A = blitzkrieg The German invasion of which country led to the official outbreak of WWII? A= Poland From where did the British evacuate most its forces when France was defeated? A = Dunkirk What were some of the things that the Nazis did in the countries that they took over? What was the name of the puppet government established in France after the Nazis took over and who was its leader? A = Vichy France…Marshall Petain Who was the leader of the free French? A = Charles DeGaulle

Only England Left Germans begin sending planes to bomb England. Called the “Battle of Britain.” People in England call it “The Blitz.” England hangs in & finally US joins war to help them.

Winston Churchill Leader of England Gave inspiring speeches

Operation Barbarossa Hitler’s invasion of Russia. Hitler had signed a non-aggression pact (Nazi-Soviet Pact). Does well at first, then stopped at Stalingrad and Leningrad.

The US Wants to be neutral (Neutrality Acts). Eventually becomes the “Arsenal for Democracy” & begins to give aid to the Allies (Lend-Lease). Starts an embargo on Japan because they don’t like what they are doing.

Japan Responds Japan will run out of oil soon if US continues embargo. Japan wants to invade Dutch East Indies (so they can get their own oil). Japan fears US will try to stop them. So Japan launches a surprise attack on the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii ( ).

Pearl Harbor

US Declares War on Japan President Roosevelt calls attack on Pearl Harbor, “A Date which will live in infamy…” 1-Day later, US declares war on Japan. Germany and Italy then declare war on US. Allies = US, England, & Russia Axis = Germany, Italy, & Japan

A = Charles DeGaulle

Review Who was the war-time leader of England who gave highly motivational speeches? A = Winston Churchill Why was there tension between the U.S. and the Japanese? Why did the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor?

Allied Strategy Allies decide to focus on defeating Germany 1 st, then Japan. Russia wanted England and US to open a second front. US and England go to North Africa first. Then go to Italy. Makes Russians mad.

The Attack on Italy After taking control of North Africa, the Allies began to attack the Axis from their “ Soft Underbelly.” The Allies (led by George S. Patton) first invaded Sicily & by 1943 had defeated Italy. During this time, Italians rebelled against Mussolini and he was killed. The German forces in Italy continued fighting however and Rome was not captured until 6/1944.

Why WWII is so Brutal Biggest thing is modern planes that can drop lots of bombs. Both the Allies and Axis bomb each others civilians. Also millions die because of Holocaust. More people die in WWII than any war.

New Technology Radar—to detect planes. Sonar—to detect subs. Allowed the allies to get more supplies across the Atlantic. The End
