Japan Government was blamed when the Great Depression hit. Military then took over the country Extreme nationalists Believed they could solve economic problems through expansion Decided to create a Pacific Empire This way they could get raw materials, have markets for its goods, and new homes for its people as the population was growing

Japan Expands Manchuria: Taken by Japan in 1931 China: Attacked by Japan in 1937 Treaty of Portsmouth, (Sept. 5 [Aug. 23, Old Style], 1905), peace settlement signed at Kittery, Maine, U.S., ending the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. According to the terms of the treaty, which was mediated by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, the defeated Russians recognized Japan as the dominant power in Korea and turned over their leases of Port Arthur and the Liaotung Peninsula, as well as the southern half of Sakhalin Island, to Japan. Both powers agreed to restore Manchuria to China. This way they could get raw materials, have markets for its goods, and new homes for its people as the population was growing

Germany invades Poland September 1, 1939 Germany invades Poland German planes came in and bombed while the infantry attacked from the ground. Warsaw, the capital of Poland was bombed relentlessly. The city was destroyed. Two days later, France and Britain decided to declare war on Germany once they invaded Poland. But Poland still fell within a few weeks, because Britain and France were not ready to respond militarily.

On April 9th, 1940, Hitler invaded Denmark and Norway. Denmark was defeated in 4 hours. Norway was defeated after a couple of months. Hitler used these lands so that he could build bases along the coast from which he could attack Britain.

On June 16, 1940, the French cabinet voted to ask Germany for armistice terms. In order to completely humiliate the French, Hitler insisted on receiving their surrender inside the same railroad car in which the Germans had surrendered to the Allies at the end of World War I.
