Reading Progress How to ensure ALL pupils make the best progress in reading at St.Nicholas-at-Wade

Elements that we have considered: That reading is perhaps the most important skill we learn at primary school and helps pupils access all other areas of the curriculum. Good primary school readers are shown to experience more success in secondary school and beyond. Once a child at school can read how do we develop them as a reader?

Not all pupils have been making as much progress as could be expected of them. How do we ensure that reading does not become a chore but that pupils value the activity? The quality and quantity of reading practice is the best predictor of success. Top 10% will read for 40 minutes bottom 10% 2 minutes How can we ensure we have accurate knowledge of a child’s progress in reading?

Accelerated reader A powerful tool to help us address some of these issues:  Enables pupils to choose books that are suitably challenging.  Develops a lifelong love of reading.  Motivates students of all ages to read more, suitably challenging, books.  Raises literacy standards for students of all ages and abilities.  Access instant reporting on each student’s progress and diagnose problems

How does it work? Children have already completed an online assessment. Children can choose books at an optimal level (ZPD) to promote success, enjoyment and progress. Books have been colour banded and labelled giving a variety of information including the ZPD and number of points. Children will take a short quiz once they have completed a book. The quizzes are a great motivator and also enable the teacher to monitor a child’s understanding of what they are reading Children can bring in books from home and see if they also have quizzes but not complete quizzes at home.

How does it work? Pupils will spend 20 minutes each day reading in class. (ERIC) Children will complete an online assessment each term to monitor progress.

How can you support your child?  Ensure your child continues to read independently every day at home.  Talk to your child about what they are reading.  Ask them about the quizzes they have completed.  Speak to the class teacher if you have any queries or concerns.

Any Questions?
