I. Formation of Metamorphic Rocks
a. Metamorphic Rocks Can form from igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks The form of the rock and/or the composition of the rock can change
Heat and Pressure Adding heat and pressure can change a rock from it’s parent rock to a new rock. For example: shale to slate to phyllite to schist to gneiss Basalt to schist Granite to gneiss
Slate to Phyllite to Schist to Gneiss
Hot Fluids Water with dissolved elements reacts with minerals in rocks and change the compositions. Mostly water and carbon dioxide
II. Classifying Metamorphic Rocks
a. Foliated Foliated rocks form when mineral grains flatten and line up in parallel lines Example: slate and gneiss
Nonfoliated No layering occurs and mineral grains do not line up Example: marble, quartzite
