Trench Mortar By: Ashley Wilson Stephanie Powell

What is a Trench Mortar? A trench mortar is a portable, muzzle-loaded weapon. It consist mainly of a hallow tube. This indirect fire weapon is aimed at high angles(45+ degrees) of elevation to reach concealed enemy targets.

History Although mortars have existed for hundreds of years they were mainly known for their successful appearance in World War II. The mortar was invented by Baron Menno Van Coehoorn. The first design of a mortar consisted of a simple iron bowl. Soon after, the mortar design was improved and made more successful.

Effects Although there were many new inventions during World War II that seemed to be more sufficient than the trench mortar; the trench mortar had certain advantages that other machines did not obtain. For example, the trench mortar was light and portable. The trench mortar is an excellent infantry support weapon by it being capable of firing at any distance and angle. The trench mortar can be transported over any type of terrain and is not burdened by the support needed for artillery. Overall, the trench mortar has been a weapon of support and success.
