Copyright © 2008 Vista Higher Learning. All rights reserved. 10.3–2 The past perfect subjunctive is used in subordinate clauses under the same conditions for other subjunctive forms, and in the same way the past perfect is used in English (I had talked, you had spoken, etc.). It refers to actions or conditions that had taken place before another past occurence. Le molestó que los escritores no hubieran asistido a su conferencia. No era cierto que la galería hubiera cerrado sus puertas definitivamente. It annoyed her that the writers hadn’t attended her lecture. It was not true that the gallery had closed its doors permanently.

However, the meaning of each sentence may be different. Esperaba que me llamaras. ¡Qué bueno oír tu voz! Esperaba que me hubieras llamado. ¿Qué pasó? I was hoping you would call me. It’s great to hear your voice! I wished that you had called me. What happened? Deseaba que me ayudaras.Deseaba que me hubieras ayudado. I wished that you would help me.I wished that you had helped me. PAST SUBJUNCTIVEPAST PERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE
