NEGOTIATING INTERSECTIONS CHAPTER 10

SEARCHING THE INTERSECTION Intersections are places where roadways meet.

IDENTIFYING Traffic Lights Crossing traffic Roadway markings Stopping or turning traffic Power lines crossing the street

APPROACHING 12-15 seconds ahead- Check signs, signals, zones, path of travel 4-6 seconds ahead- widen search pattern, check zones, 2 seconds ahead- point of No return

STOPPING If approaching a stop sign, light, yield, or another stopped car check your rear view mirror. When stopped if you do not have a clear line of sight, ease forward so that you can see. When stopping behind another vehicle always stop where you can see their back tires touching the pavement

RIGHT OF WAY Privilege of having immediate use of a certain part of the roadway REMEMBER…… Your action shouldn’t cause others to yield, stop, change path of direction, or slow Signs do not stop traffic for you Don’t Assume Many times it is better to yield anyway

WHO AND WHAT?? At stop signs to pedestrians At fresh green lights to pedestrians and other cars Coming from an alley, driveway, or private road to pedestrians and other vehicles on street At all yield signs To emergency vehicles (lights and sound) When turning left at intersection Four-way stops At uncontrolled intersections

JUDGING Before entering traffic you must find a large enough gap in traffic Depends on your maneuver and the speed of the other vehicle

CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS Fresh green light- just turned Stale green light- long time Yellow- decide to stop or proceed Red- STOP
