Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I People Shoot: Feedback S tudent Examples: Jim’s tight-head shot uses outdoor light and natural background. Jenny’s self portrait is cropped less tight. The light is the same Skylight but the background is indoor. Light direction is side for Jim and much more frontal for Jenny. Jim’s side light is coming from the wrong direction putting his eyes into shadow. Jenny’s slight side light is creating a beautiful catch light in her eyes.

They need to be made dark or retouched out during the Photoshop lab work process. I like the curvilinear alignment created with the subject’s left shoulder and the boulder. The negative space breakup is also very good using the classic 1/3 x 2/3 rule in both the vertical and horizontal formats.

If the light direction was reversed, the front of the face would ‘open up’ improving the face detail and also adding catch light to the eyes. And the ear would have been placed in the shadow side minimizing its presence.

As with most digital cameraoutput,thecameraoriginal was flat. The processed image now has the presence, punch, and depth that helps the subject to be believable there….

The 1/3 to 1/2 f/stop over exposure caused the skin to be too light and the white shirt to be ‘blown-out’. The lab work took care of most of the exposure issue but the shirt was custom darkened.

The background distance is also too close but the color works well in the composition. It usually works well to separate the subject from the back- ground by about 6 to 12’. That allows for lighting the background separately. And it usually puts the background out-of-focus in a natural way.

Capturing people can be particularly challenging because of the variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. And there is no simple rule to make it finger snapping easy. I’ll just offer one suggestion, which is to USE SOFT LIGHT coming slightly from the side…
