Brief Architects Undertake design development of the warehouse and office complex based on the plan below. Select an area of the warehouse or showroom complex to develop in full detail. As a guide, this should be an area of 5m x 5m and be inclusive of the footings, flooring, roofing and envelope system. The major element of this project requires you to develop the construction technology for this area of the building to a highly detailed level in a way that relates to an architectural firm who are recognized internationally for their excellence in design (and construction as a means of realizing this design). Represent the design development of the building assembly in the form of an exhibition-quality model with the notation required to communicate the development of construction technology to a third party. As an architect, you should always refer to ‘the greats’ for ideas on ways to construct the ideas in your mind. After all, a wall-roof connection would be designed completely differently by Foster as compared to Mies. The intention of this is also to elevate the application of construction technology into design development as an intrinsic element of ARCHITECTURE (which is, after all, why you are doing this unit).

National Center for Atmospheric Research Boulder, Colorado Abstracted, blocky, forms evocative of the rugged Southwestern U.S. landscape. Everson Museum of Art Syracuse, New York Complex linear concrete forms. Creates dramatic shadows. Christian Science Center Boston, Massachusetts Repetition in facade, new/old juxtaposition, reflecting pool. Johnson Museum of Art Ithaca, New York Massive concrete forms bold, asymmetrical composition. Hancock Place Boston, Massachusetts, Reflective obelisk skyscraper. Famous glazing problems Javits Convention Center New York Enormous expanse of glass-clad, space frame enclosed space. Pyramide du Louvre Paris, France Elegant entry space. Glass, steel rods and cable. Bank Of China 18th April, th May, It was the first composite mega structure space frame high-rise building. It was also the tallest building in Asia at the time of its construction. Source:

Physical description: The form of he building was created by four triangular glass and aluminum towers of varying heights emerge from a granite podium. The building sports a 15-storey atrium. The design brief inspired engineers to create the first space truss frame for a tall building. The building has triangular bracing and step-backs as a structural adaptations to the high wind loads caused by Hong Kong typhoons. The silver reflective glass is glazed in a low maintenance dry gasket system, and the curtain wall is a unitized design assembled off-site under factory conditions. This enabled close quality control of all aspects of the frame assembly, which numbers over 10,000 pieces in total. The megastructural steelwork is expressed externally by naturally anodized panels that form part of the curtainwall. Virtually every aspect of this building was challenging from moving material to a height never before achieved outside of the USA, to glazing the largest 25mm thick pattern cut lights ever produced. All required not only careful planning but also the development of new erection techniques. Idea #1: Idea for tilt up panel design Source:

Form of warehouse/office space influenced by the form of the Bank of China. Use of materials influenced by buildings such as Everson Museum of Art and Johnson Museum of Art. Integration of Structure (exposure of portal frame from exterior, and exposing the reinforcement) influenced by Pyramide du Louvre.
