Ancient Greek Traditions By: Kendall, Alyssa, Alexi, Felicia & Jasmine

What were the funeral traditions of Ancient Greece? They would prepare the body for an elaborate burial It consisted of 3 Main parts: The Prothesis ( the wake) the laying out of the body, The second part was Ekphora ( Funeral Procession) and The last part- Interment. Could be a burial or a cremation

What was the Greek view of After life? Greeks believed that at the moment of death the psyche, or spirit of the dead, left the body as a little breath or puff of wind. The deceased was then prepared for burial according to the time- honored rituals Proper burial was needed, if not suffrage would take place

What was the belief of not burying the dead? The soul responsible for a person’s personality and moral decisions received the eternal punishment or bliss for the choices of the human form. The burial rituals perhaps spawned from this belief that the soul must be guided into the afterlife. If the body was not given a proper burial according to Greek ritual, the soul would remain trapped between the worlds of the living and the underworld.

Why did the Ancient Greeks hold Festivals? Most festivals consisted of playwrights Often competitions would be held for different plays to compete Festivals gathered many people to see shows and performances Greeks were known for there competitive nature which made these festivals something to look forward to.

Quiz What are the 3 funeral traditions? What was the importance of proper burial? What is the significance towards festivals in Greek culture?
