Egyptian Art* Historical Background Egyptian civilization / 3100 – 30 BC The culture of ancient Egypt developed along the banks of the Nile River more than 3,000 years before the birth of Christ.(3,000 BC)* Religion influenced every part of Egyptian life.* They believed “Afterlife”.*

Egyptian Art Characteristics* Ancient Egyptian art refers to the style of painting, sculpture, crafts and architecture developed by the civilization in the lower Nile Valley from 3100 BC to 30 AD.* Paintings and sculptures were both highly stylized and symbolic.* Hieroglyphics was written in symbols and pictures instead of letters and words.* Papyrus texts illustrate all dimensions of ancient Egyptian life and include literary, religious, historical and administrative documents.*

Paintings* Ancient Egyptian artists decorated temples and tombs. * Scenes from the person buried in the tomb were intended to remind the spirit of life on earth.*

Architecture* Ancient Egyptian architects used sun-dried and kiln-baked bricks, fine sandstone, limestone and granite.* The pyramids were built for the tombs of the Pharaohs.* Pharaoh: Egyptian rulers, who were worshiped as Gods and held complete authority over the kingdom. Construction of a burial monument commenced as soon a pharaoh was named, and continued until he died.
