Notes les 8-9 janvier Les comparatifs (Comparatives) À mon avis, les maths sont plus difficiles que le français. In my opinion, math is more difficult than French. Charlotte est moins sociable que Catherine. Charlotte is less social than Catherine. Je vais au cinéma aussi souvent que toi. I go to the movies as often as you.

plus + adjectif/adverbe + que = more…than moins + adjectif/adverbe + que = less …than aussi + adjectif/adverbe + que = as…as

The adjective agrees in gender and number with the noun that appears before the comparative construction. La biologie est plus intéressante que les maths. Biology is more interesting than math. Les maths sont moins intéressantes que la biologie. Math is less interesting than biology.

Les adverbes Most adverbs in French end in –ment. Here are a few of the most common adverbs: activement (actively) constamment (constantly) franchement (frankly, honestly) fréquemment (frequently) lentement (slowly) rapidement (rapidly) sérieusement (seriously) vraiment (really, truly)

Some adverbs are irregular and don’t end in –ment. bien (well) mal (poorly) souvent (often) vite (fast)

When comparing nouns, use the expressions plus de (more), moins de (less) or autant de (as much, as many). Bill Gates a plus d’argent que Paul Allen. Bill Gates has more money than Paul Allen. Je n’ai pas autant de patience que toi. I don’t have as much patience as you. Nous regardons moins de télévision que vous. We watch less TV than you guys.

Les superlatifs Superlatives describe the most or least of a category. Le TGV est le train le plus rapide du monde. The TGV is the fastest train in the world. Paul et Anne sont les élèves les plus intelligents de la classe. Paul and Anne are the most intelligent students in the class. Mon cours d’économie est le moins intéressant de tous mes cours. Superlatives are formed as follows: le/la/les + noun + le/la/les + plus/moins + adjective Sophie est la fille la plus âgée de l’équipe. Sophie is the oldest girl on the team.

Some adjectives and adverbs have irregular comparative and superlative forms.
