The Pequest Trout Hatchery & Natural Resource Education Center is operated by the Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish & Wildlife. About the Pequest Trout Hatchery Pequest produces up to 700,000 trout annually for stocking in the public waters of New Jersey. Trout are stocked into 200+ rivers and lakes across NJ Trout are raised from egg to 10.5” in 1½ years Visitors to the site use the area to learn about trout and how they are raised, as well as to use the nearly 5,000 acres of land that surrounds the hatchery for recreational opportunities such as hiking, hunting and bird watching, while great fishing opportunities abound in the nearby Pequest River.

Visiting Hours: Monday – Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Visiting is at your own pace…. Take as little or as long as you like to tour the facility. The sidewalk will lead you to the nursery building and to the observation deck—each location has information posted about the process of raising trout.

Hiking Trails The Pequest Wildlife Management Area (WMA) offers 3.9 miles of trails through a variety of habitats. The Red Trail offers interpretive signs about the habitat and is used to access the other two trails on site, the Yellow trail and Blue trail. Horses, bikes, ATVs and other motorized vehicles are not permitted on the WMA. Directions to the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center The main entrance to the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center is on Rt. 46 between Great Meadows and Buttzville, approximately 9 miles west of Hackettstown in scenic Warren County. The mailing, 911 and GPS address is 605 Pequest Rd., Oxford, NJ the hatchery's rear entrance. Google Map Directions to Main Entrance From North Jersey: From Rt. 80: Take Exit #19 (Rt. 517): Go south toward Hackettstown approximately 5 miles. At the traffic light in downtown Hackettstown make a right onto Rt. 46 West (Main St.). Go approximately 9 miles to hatchery entrance on eastbound side. From Rt. 78: Take Exit #17 (Rt. 31): Take Rt. 31 North approximately 17 miles to its end at Rt. 46. Make a right onto Rt. 46 East. Hatchery entrance is approximately 2.5 miles. From South Jersey: From Garden State Parkway: Take GSP North to Exit #127 immediately after the Driscoll Bridge over the Raritan River. Follow signs for Rt. 440/I-287 North. Take Rt. 287 North to exit #30 onto Rt. I-78 West. Follow Rt. 78 directions above. From NJ Turnpike/I-295: Take the NJ TPK North to crossover to I-295 North. Take I-295 North around Trenton to I-95 South. Take Exit #4 onto Rt. 31 North. Continue on Rt. 31 North approximately 43 miles to Rt. 46. Make a right onto Rt. 46 East. Hatchery entrance is approximately 2.5 miles.
