© 2008 SWITCH 4 Internet Proposal CTI Focal Points of the Proposal –Nation-wide availability of SWITCHlan and Wireless access points at Universities as operators (PWLAN) –Weather Stations (SwissMeteo at Payern) –WMN as Gateway to the SWITCH Backbone Feasibility study: Wireless Mesh Networks between wireless sensor network and access points: –Propose:... The objective of the feasibility study is to identify, design, implement, test, deploy and evaluate wireless mesh network technologies and architectures, which are able to interconnect wireless sensor networks in an energy-efficient, secure, robust, and powerful way to fixed research networks and infrastructures... –Project Idea: (today, future perspective) - To build up a Wireless testbed, a Wireless Mesh infrastructure for providing series of measurement - WMN Backbone (Focus SWITCH) AP WSN WMN
© 2008 SWITCH 5 Proposal MICS Interconnecting Wireless Sensor and Research Networks by Wireless Mesh Technology.....The developed system (Feasibility Study - CTI) must support strong access control and security. It must be investigated how it can be integrated into the authorization and authentication infrastructure (AAI) deployed by SWITCH in the Swiss research network What are the exploitation scenarios and the tech transfer potential? We aim to develop a solution to be usable for most of the Swiss researchers, who are using wireless sensor networks for environmental and meteorological monitoring. Exploitation of the results after the lifetime of MICS can be supported by SWITCH. SWITCH is able to make the developed systems available to interested researchers ==> Role of SWITCH - Network Infrastructure Provider ==> Vision: Backbone Extension by WLAN-Technology
© 2008 SWITCH 6 SWITCH’s Vision Build a common, wireless communication infrastructure covering inhabited areas Each partner’s sensor sites act as relay for the others (but additional relays might be needed) Many links to terrestrial research network Mesh networking instead of point2point links

© 2008 SWITCH 8 Possible Opportunities for ECAM A common development of a temporary or permanent Mesh- Infrastructure in harsh environment: Wireless Backbone as an extension of the Fiber-Backbone Security: Build up an Security-Infrastructure based on AAI resp. eduGAIN: What have to be secure? – Secure the network - Intrusion Detection, network based – Secure data – Secure Configuration-, Monitoring-Infrastructure – Simply gain technical expertise into the ECAM in Sensor-Networks / Mesh Networks
