What is the format for an Extended Response (essay)?

 Read the directions and the prompt-  Read the directions and the prompt---typically there are multiple tasks/questions to attend to; underlining key words/phrases;  Read the question carefully, underlining key words/phrases;  Restate the question(s);  Author’s purposes or opinions are the focus—not yours!;  Write neatly;  Partial credit is given just for attempting the answer;  If using a direct quote from the text, put it in quotation marks;  Do not include your opinion or outside information —this test is assessing how well you read not what you know!;  RELAX!!! You’re going to do great!

 The recommended time allotment is minutes;  Extended Response are scored as 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4;  Students must answer in the space provided— however, if you need more room you can use blank space in other parts of the test booklet!;  An Extended Response consists of 4 paragraphs— Intro, 2 Body, and a Conclusion; 3 TEXT BASED examples /details=5-7 sentences in the body paragraphs;  Write 3 TEXT BASED examples /details=5-7 sentences in the body paragraphs;  Write 3 sentences in your Intro & Concluding paragraphs.

The Mona Lisa has been through many struggles including thieves and horrendous conditions. It survived both of those situations and is now safely displayed in the Louvre. The pinewood piece is in perfect condition and does not seem like it was in a trunk. What a change!  Through out this week, you will be presented in class and for homework with Extended Response prompts;  You will be OUTLINING how you would respond to each prompt;  First, it will be modeled in class, then you will try it independently;  The idea is, you already KNOW how to write paragraphs, therefore it is just knowing how to pull it all together into an essay or Extended Response!
