Breathing By Neil Bronks

09:55Breathing The big muscle that pulls the lungs down and pushes out the air is called the diaphragm The rib muscles help

Demo of lungs 09:55

The Respiratory System Ribs – to protect the chest Bronchioles Bronchi Trachea – has stiff rings of cartilage to prevent it collapsing Rib muscles – to raise and lower the ribs Lung Diaphragm – muscular sheet pulls air into lungs Alveoli (“air sacs”) – gas exchange takes place here

09:55 Gas Exchange Small sacs in the lungs are surrounded by capillaries. It is in these ALVEOLI that oxygen enters our blood and the co 2 leaves Alveoli are very good at exchanging gases because… 1)They have a LARGE surface area 2)They have a good blood supply 3)Very thin walls

09:55 Gas Exchange Air breathed inAir breathed out 79% 21%18% 0.03%3%

Testing for carbon dioxide Air from lungs Limewater turns milky/cloudy Limewater Proves Carbon Dioxide exhaled air

Fish breath with gills Extract dissolved oxygen from the water. Water passes over membranes in neck

09:55Insects Insects breath air by a system of air- filled tubes called tracheae. Tracheae open to the outside through small holes called spiracles

09:55Smoking Half the people who smoke WILL die early Tar/Toxins in the smoke causes many diseases Heart Attacks, Lung cancer, emphysema etc etc etc

09:55Circulation 1) Blood gets pumped from the heart to the lungs and picks up oxygen 2) The blood is then taken back to the heart… 3)The heart pumps the blood to the intestine (where glucose is added)… 4) … and to the rest of the body (where oxygen and glucose is removed) 5) After the oxygen and glucose have been removed for respiration the blood is sent back to the heart and starts again

09:55 Respiration means releasing energy from food Glucose in the food is broken down inside cells, and energy is released Most organisms use oxygen for this process – so it is called aerobic respiration

09:55 Respiration means releasing energy from food Glucose in the food is broken down inside cells, and energy is released Most organisms use oxygen for this process – so it is called aerobic respiration

09:55Respiration Words – breathing, energy, Mrs Gren, respiration, food A while ago we learnt about ___ ______. Each of these life processes needs ENERGY. ___________ is the process our bodies use to produce this energy: Glucose + Oxygen Water + Carbon Dioxide + ENERGY The glucose we need comes from ______ and the oxygen from _________. Water and carbon dioxide are breathed out. The MAIN product of this equation is _________.
