R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # 81 1 Review - God has not rejected His people Rom 11:1- 6 1a I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! 1b For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2a God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Paul was an Israelite and was not rejected but had obtained righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ. He is living proof that God did not reject Israel. Paul is also a church age believer since there is neither Jew nor Greek in Christ see Gal. 3:26-28

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # b Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel ? 3 "Lord, THEY HAVE KILLED YOUR PROPHETS, THEY HAVE TORN DOWN YOUR ALTARS, AND I ALONE AM LEFT, AND THEY ARE SEEKING MY LIFE.“ 4 But what is the divine response to him? "I HAVE KEPT for Myself SEVEN THOUSAND MEN WHO HAVE NOT BOWED THE KNEE TO BAAL." In the history of Israel during Elijah’s time a remnant of 7000 had not bowed the knee to Baal Review - God has not rejected His people Rom 11:1- 6

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God's gracious choice. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace. Paul says there is a remnant at the present time (kairos – fixed and definite period, season) A remnant in Paul’s day could not be separate from the Church since it is one body consisting of Jew and Gentile. ex: Apollos in Acts 18:25 Review - God has not rejected His people Rom 11:1- 6

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! 13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. 15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? Romans 11:11 – 15

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. they (surely) did not stumble so as to fall - May it never be ! stumble - ptaiō - "to cause to stumble," signifies, intransitively, "to stumble," used metaphorically in Rom. 11:11, How did Israel stumble ? see Rom. 9:32-33 fall - piptō - "to fall," is used (g) of persons, in "falling" morally or spiritually, see 1 Cor. 10:6-8 This stumble by Israel will not be permanent

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. salvation (has come) to the Gentiles by their transgression to make them jealous make jealous - parazeloo - "to provoke to jealousy" (para, "beside," used intensively, and zēlos ), is found in Rom. 10:19; Rom. 11:11, of God's dealings with Israel through his merciful dealings with Gentiles; jealousy in a good sense – to stir up desire see Rom.10:19 lit., "a fall beside," from uprightness and truth see Gal 6:1

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! their transgression (is) riches for the world their failure (is) riches for the Gentiles riches - ploutos - of spiritual and moral "riches," (a) possessed by God and exercised towards men, See Rom. 2:4 lit., "a fall beside," from uprightness and truth a decrease, diminution," denotes "a loss how much more will their fulfillment be! What fulfillment is this referring to? Israel in the millennial kingdom - Isa. 14:1-3, Joel 3:1-2 that which has been completed

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, Who is Paul addressing ? a. Gentiles in general b. Gentile believers I am an apostle of Gentiles 1 Timothy 2:7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Acts 13:46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # c I magnify my ministry, 14 if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. I magnify my ministry I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen save some of them and if magnify - doxazō - "to magnify, extol, praise" (see doxa below), especially of "glorifying;" God, i.e., ascribing honor to Him, acknowledging Him as to His being, attributes and acts, i.e., Vine

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? acceptance - proslēmpsis - pros, "to," and lēpsis "a receiving" (akin to lambanō), is used in Rom. 11:15, of the restoration of Israel. Vine rejection - apobolē - lit., "casting away" (apo, "away," ballō, "to cast"), is translated "loss" in Acts 27:22; in Rom. 11:15, "casting away," of the temporary exclusion of the nation of Israel from its position of Divine favor Vine For, in view of the fact that their repudiation results in the world's reconciliation, what will the receiving of them result in if not in life from among the dead? Wuest if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world

R. Henderson 5/13/07 Lesson # Romans 11 v:11 to 15 Summary Israel is being provoked to jealousy via the Gentiles * Israel has stumbled but not fallen irretrievably Through Israel’s sin of unbelief salvation has come to the Gentiles and provoked Israel to jealousy Great riches and blessing to all nations when Israel is saved * from Hal Molloy’s Romans notes Dec. 1978
