4 Digital Media Delivery Options Streaming Digital Media: Content received over the Internet for real-time playback on demand Downloaded Digital Media: Content received over the Internet and downloaded onto BYU’s server(s) for playback over a local area network Pre-loaded Media Server: A hard drive is loaded with digital media files and then delivered to BYU where it is connected to the local area network for playback Individual Digital Media: Specific media content is delivered on CD-ROM or DVD for playback on a desktop computer or DVD player

Internet-Based vs. Locally-Based Digital Delivery... There are two fundamental categories of digital delivery: 1. Internet-Based Service 2. Locally-Based Service.

Internet Based Services Enables access to digital media over the Internet Purchase and view your content stored on a remote server through a web browser View program previews, teachers’ guides, online assignment pages, and other electronic resources that help you integrate media into your classroom

Locally-based Service Media is stored on a server within BYU View your content through a web browser, but it is accessed from a local server at your location instead of a remote server Just like with an Internet-Based Service, a local server allows you to view and use any available electronic resources

Internet-Based Service Streaming Digital Media Digital media in your collection is accessed over the Internet and viewed as a real-time streaming video feed directly to your computer Storage of the media resides off-site and is accessed as required. Eliminates the need for large-scale, on-site digital media storage capacity.

Requires no local storage space Includes a web-based user interface that allows you to search, sort, and view your digital media Your digital content can be accessed from anywhere at any time You can view an entire program or just a specific segment of content Benefits

Downloaded Digital Media Digital media in your collection is received via Internet downloads to your institution’s local server(s) for playback over your local area network and display on your computer

Benefits All media files are stored locally Digital media can be viewed from anywhere in the institution You can use a variety of user interfaces and tools to access and view your digital media You can use a higher quality digital media file than with a streaming solution

Locally-Based Service Pre-Loaded Media Server A collection of your selected digital media is pre-loaded on computer hard drive that can be connected to your institution’s local area network.

Benefits No broadband Internet connection needed All media files are stored locally on a separate server Digital media can be viewed from anywhere in the institution You can use a variety of user interfaces and tools to access and view your digital media

Internet-Based Service Individual Digital Media Digital content is stored and delivered on a physical piece of media – a CD-ROM or DVD- ROM. It can then be copied onto your institution’s local server(s) for playback over your local area network or viewed independently on stand-alone DVD players or computer DVD drives.
