COMPRESSION STANDARDS The evolution of compression technology  JPEG  MPEG-2  MPEG-4, H.264, AVC (Advanced Video Coding)  H.265, HEVC (High-efficiency Video Coding)

4K PLAYBACK – STANDARDS Optimal playback of native 4K content on a 4K UHD display New 4K Standards  H.265/HEVC video compression: enables delivery of high- quality 4K content at a manageable file size and data rate  HDMI 2.0: only the new HDMI 2.0 output can support 60 fps playback

4K PLAYBACK – ENCODING Process to deliver native 4K 60fps Video Encoding  The native 4K (3840x2160) video file should be encoded to the new compression format H.265 in order to playback at 60 fps  H.265 HEVC (high efficiency video codec) enables delivery of high-quality 4K content at about the same file size and data rate as HD content at H.264

H.265/HEVC – THE NEW STANDARD The importance of proper video compression Smaller File  Advanced compression efficiencies from larger block sizes  Up to 50% efficiency gain in coding translates to lower bitrates Better Picture Quality  Increased intra prediction modes and higher encoding computation allows for soft blur effect rather than macro-blocking

4K PLAYBACK – DECODE Process to deliver native 4K 60fps Decoding  Player must be able to decode an H.265 4K (3840x2160) encoded file  Player must be able to decode at a data rates of 60 fps

4K PLAYBACK – OUTPUT Process to deliver native 4K 60fps Output to 4K Display  Player must have HDMI 2.0 output to enable playback at a frame rate of 60 fps  HDMI 1.4a only supports 30 fps
