MATHS WEEK LESSON Learning Objective: To be able to draw and interpret graphs involving distance, time and speed. Level 6

I went for a walk. The distance-time graph shows information about my walk. Which statement best describes my walk? a)I was walking faster and faster. b) I was walking slower and slower. c) I was walking north-east. d) I was walking at a steady speed. e) I was walking uphill. Time Distance Time Distance Can you describe these walks? Time Distance

Diamonds are forever? Gem Raid Car Chase Hunt Straight up Great North Road – Sad Harry suspect. Police believe that Sad Harry broke into the safe at De Vere’s in Stevenage last night. It is alleged that he stole all their diamonds and then set off at exactly midnight from Stevenage up the Great North Road at 40 miles per hour so as not to attract attention.

Time Distance from London (miles) Midnight 1am 2am 3am 50 1.How far does Harry travel in the first hour of his journey? 2.Stevenage is 50 miles north of London. How far would Harry be from London at 1am? 3.Copy and complete the table for Harry’s journey. Police believe that Sad Harry broke into the safe at De Vere’s in Stevenage last night. It is alleged that he stole all their diamonds and then set off at exactly midnight from Stevenage up the Great North Road at 40 miles per hour so as not to attract attention.

Time Midnight 12.30am 1am 1.30am2am 2.30am 3am x 160 Draw a graph for Harry’s journey.

4.Draw a graph for Minnie’s journey from London on the same axes as Sad Harry. 5.What speed was Minnie travelling at? 6.How far was Harry from London after half an hour? 7.How far from London was Minnie at the same time.? 8.How far apart were the two cars? 9.At what time did Minnie pass Sad Harry? The Manageress of De Vere’s, Minnie Sparkler, was in London at the time. She leapt into her car and set off at midnight at a steady speed up the Great North Road. By 2am she had travelled 120 miles. In fact, she helped Harry plan the whole thing and wanted to get to the hideout before him.

Time Midnight 12.30am 1am 1.30am2am 2.30am 3am x 160 x x x x Answers: C3 b) 60mph C4 a) 70miles. b) 30miles. c) 40miles. d) 2.30am Harry Minnie

The police did not hear of the raid until 1.30am. A car was immediately sent from London, and travelled north at a speed of 120mph. The police wanted to speak to Minnie and Sad Harry. Whose car did they catch up with first? Draw another line on your graph to show who it was.
