Time, length, capacity and volume.

Measurements must have a number and a unit.

What do I measure LengthMassTimeDensityTemperatureVolume Ml, L g/ml Degree celcius Min, sec, hr g, kg mm, cm, m, km

The basic everyday units of the metric system are the metre, litre and kilogram. Length 1cm=10mm 1m=100cm=1000mm 1km= 1000m Length 1cm=10mm 1m=100cm=1000mm 1km= 1000m Mass 1g=1000mg 1kg=1000g 1t=1000kg Mass 1g=1000mg 1kg=1000g 1t=1000kg Capacity 1L=1000mL 1kL=1000L 1ML=1000kL= L Capacity 1L=1000mL 1kL=1000L 1ML=1000kL= L Conversion Rule: From big to small, we multiply From Small to big, we divide.

What do we Measure? Length- the distance between two pts. Mass – the amt. of matter in an object. Volume- the amt. of space something occupies. Density- the amt. of particles packed into a space. Temperature- the amt. of energy in an object. Time- how long it takes for something to happen.

Length Units: Kilometre Km Metre M Centimetre Cm Millimetre mm 1 km=1000 m 1m=100 cm=1000 mm 1cm = 10 mm 1m = 1000mm Your height The width of a road The length of a pencil The distance between WPGH and your home Length- the distance between two pts. Length conversion To convert small units into large units you divide. ( ÷ ) To convert large units to small units you multiply. ( × )

Remember ! To convert small units into large units you divide. ( ÷ ) To convert large units to small units you multiply. ( × ) Converting units of length

24-our time

Time can be expressed in a 12- hour a.m./p.m. form, or as 24-hour time.

The 12-hour clock notation uses am and pm to indicate morning and afternoon. am is the time from 12 midnight and before 12 noon. pm is the time from 12 noon and before 12 midnight. The 12-hour clock notation uses am and pm to indicate morning and afternoon. am is the time from 12 midnight and before 12 noon. pm is the time from 12 noon and before 12 midnight. For example 6.23am means 23 minutes past 6 in the morning 7.45am means quarter to 8 in the morning For example 6.23am means 23 minutes past 6 in the morning 7.45am means quarter to 8 in the morning 12-hour clock

The 24-hour clock does not require the use of am or pm. Afternoon is indicated by a number bigger than 12. When converting from the 12-hour clock to the 24- hour clock remember: for any time after pm, add 12. For example 3.00pm becomes (3 + 12) = pm becomes ( ) = hour clock

2 am ⇒ am ⇒ am ⇒ 1100 ⇒ 2pm ⇒ 5pm ⇒ 11 pm ⇒ am time pm time (+ 12) Converting to 24 hour time

Is measured in square units Area Different for each shape Involves multiplication J. Q area The size of a surface Back to main menu

Is measured in cubic units Volume control on a radio Involves multiplication Involves 3 dimensional figures The amount of space inside a container Put the volume down

Perimeter to measure Peri For 2D shapes meter distance around a shape The units are mm, cm, m, km It is called circumference for circles Made of two words involves addition

Perimeter is the distance around the shape Perimeter = = 10m

Is measured in square units Different for each shape Involves multiplication The backyard area The size of a surface What is area?

It is 2 meters by 3 meters, Area = 2 m × 3 m = 6 m 2 Area is the size a surface takes up. It is measured in square units.

Capacity Is the amount a container can hold This jug has a capacity of 250 ml. The volume of juice in the jug is 175 ml
