Failing Forward Volume 2, Notebook 5 Lesson 2: Rethinking Failure

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John…they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13)

If You’ve Failed, Are You a Failure?

Achievers reject rejection. They do not base their self-worth on perfect _________________. Achievers see failure as _______________. Achievers keep ________________ realistic. PERFORMANCE TEMPORARY EXPECTATIONS

Achievers focus on their ______________. Achievers risk __________ in order to try new and better ways to solve problems. Achievers __________back. They know that a failure does not make them a failure. STRENGTHS FAILURE BOUNCE

Biblical Case Study: Peter (Matthew 26:69-75; 1 Peter 1:1-5)

He stepped out of the boat to walk on water (Matthew 14:27-30). He identified Jesus as the Christ (Matthew 16:13-20). He witnessed the transfiguration on the mountain (Matthew 17:1-8).

What happened to Peter: He __________ from his failures. He refused to be a __________. He ___________ in his faith. LEARNED QUITTER MATURED

He was _________ with the Holy Spirit. He failed ___________. FILLED FORWARD

Take the ______ Out of Failure! YOU

Fear of failure will stop all forward progress. Here are several results of enslavement to fear:

1.____________. 2.____________________. 3._____________________. 4.____________. 5.____________. 6._________________. PARALYSIS PROCRASTINATION PURPOSELESSNESS SELF-PITY EXCUSES HOPELESSNESS

Accepting Responsibility for Failures

Many people make mistakes but refuse to admit them. They tend to see every obstacle or error as somebody else’s fault. As a result, they generally respond in one or more of the following ways:

They _____________ with a display of anger. (Blow up) They try to _______ their failure. (Cover up) They work _________ and _________, but without making changes. (Speed up) OVERREACT HIDE HARDERFASTER

They try to __________ their mistake. (Back up) They ______. (Give up) EXCUSE QUIT

Leadership expert, Peter Drucker, wrote: “The better a man is, the more mistakes he will make, for the more new things he will try. I would never promote to a top-level job a man who was not making mistakes…otherwise he is sure to be mediocre.” Mistakes really do pave the road to achievement.

Biblical Case Study: King David (1 Chronicles 21:1-28)

David refused to ____________ others for his foolish decision. David ____________ his failure. David accepted full _________________ for his actions. David ____________ and moved forward. ADMITTED RESPONSIBILITY REPENTED BLAME

David ______________ the Lord. David _____________ his commitment to the Lord. WORSHIPPED RENEWED

David accepted responsibility for his failure. Until a person takes this step, all other steps on the pathway to achievement are impossible.
