 The purpose of teaching this lesson is to educate children on the devastating effects the Berlin wall had socially, politically, economically, and geographically on the residents of Berlin and the rest of the world

Students will:  sort and identify the effects the Berlin wall had on residents of Berlin on both sides.  be able to evaluate and explain the events leading to the creation of the Berlin Wall.  identify and compare both the USSR and the United States stance for and against the rise of the Berlin Wall.

 Engaging strategy would be mixing room and placing rope across classroom as to depicting separation of east and West Berlin.  Explain and engage class using primary and secondary sources the background to the building of the Berlin wall, followed by response by both soviet and American sides to their approval and disapproval of creation of wall.  Engage students to analyze and discuss within class how they would feel in that happened to them.  Extend learning experiences by having students share how we can prevent such things from happening in the future.

 Primary sources from both the Soviet Union and United States sides to their responses of building the Berlin wall and oppositions to its creation by the United States. Ex: visual, audio aides.  Secondary sources backing primary sources such as visual or audio aides.  Rope

 For this lesson I plan to divide the room as to portray the Berlin wall separating East and West Berlin using rope. No student groupings would be necessary for this lesson, as for EL learners they would be paired up with an English speaker to help them understand the lesson presented.  As for advanced learners I would make them analyze and evaluate the proceedings with an argumentative writing assignment based from the lesson

 In order to learn that students achieved objective of lesson plan assessment will be imbedded in the form of asking students questions and feedback regarding to what they read, what they learned, and how would they feel if all of a sudden they were separated by a wall from their families and from the things they cherished

 This lesson has its good and bad, the good is that it’s a fairly interesting topic and easy for students to connect to in a personal level by having them critically analyze how they would feel if they would all of a sudden separated from their loved ones in an instant. This reflection informs me that I can use visual and audio aids as primary sources to better communicate the idea that the Berlin wall creation was a wrong one for the people of Berlin in more than one aspect of life. And for next lesson incorporate more visual aids to help aid students understand lesson better. In order to learn that students achieved objective of lesson plan assessment will be imbedded in the form of asking students questions and feedback regarding to what they read, what they learned, and how would they feel if all of a sudden they were separated by a wall from their families and from the things they cherished
