South Dakota History The Good The Bad The Ugly By Randy Pool

The Good  Provided food  Most of the Buffalo was used as a food source  The hair was used for rope  The fur was used for clothing, shelter, and blankets  Was used as a trading tool  Hides were traded for weapons and horses  Was used as a weather indicator  The tribes followed the grazing patterns of the Buffalo

The Bad  Buffalo nearly became extinct  In the late 1800’s there were less than 100,000  Many ranchers were unable to graze their cattle  The Buffalo would travel 100 miles a week grazing  Many Buffalo were needlessly slaughtered for their hides and the delicacy of certain parts.  The Buffalo were chased over “Buffalo jumps”

The Ugly  The appearance of the buffalo isn’t appealing to the eye.  They cause a lot of damage to the habitat  Buffalo eat the prairie down lower than cattle

Famous People Associated With the Buffalo  Frederick Dupree  Scotty Philip Scotty Philip  William Hauck  William Hornaday William Hornaday

The Buffalo Today  Raised mostly for food  Buffalo meat is healthy  Raised mostly in State Parks and on Reservations  Buffalo can be found in the Badlands Natl. Park and on several Indian Reservations in South Dakota  A large herd is located on the Bad River in Stanley County  No longer on the endangered species list  Today there are an estimated 350,00 Buffalo
