US DOE Geothermal Technologies Program Overview for NCURA April 2011 Eric K. Hass, GTP Branch Chief US DOE Golden Field Office
American Reinvestment and Recovery Act 2009 On May 27, 2009, President Obama announced $350 Million in Recovery Act funding for geothermal technologies An additional $50 million will be made available for projects in ground source heat pumps "We have an ambitious agenda to put millions of people to work by investing in clean-energy technology like solar and geothermal energy. These technologies represent two pieces of a broad energy portfolio that will help us aggressively fight climate change and renew our position as a global leader in clean energy jobs.”-- Secretary of Energy Steven Chu

Enhanced Geothermal Systems Objective: Investigate advanced reservoir stimulation techniques for EGS in various geological and geographic settings throughout the United States. Deployment Strategy: Select up to ten new EGS systems demo projects in various geologic formations and geographic regions, including green fields that will quantitatively demonstrate and validate stimulation techniques that successfully sustain sufficient fluid flow and heat extraction rates for 5-7 years that produce up to 50 MWe per year per project site /geothermal reservoir. Funding: $90M in Recovery Act funds to rapidly commercialize technologies and reduce upfront risk Geothermal Demonstrations (G1a)
Geothermal energy production from oil and gas fields, geopressured fields, and low temperature resources Geothermal Demonstrations (G1b) Objective: Demonstrate geothermal energy production from oil and gas fields, geopressured fields, and low temperature resources throughout the United States. Deployment Strategy: Funding opportunity announcement opened on May 27, 2009 to seek applications from consortia of industry, academia and Federal Labs. DOE expects to select up to 20 new geothermal power generation projects. Funding: $50M in Recovery Act funds to rapidly commercialize technologies and reduce upfront risk
EGS Research and Development (G2) Objective: Accelerate EGS technology development through cost-shared R&D that will allow EGS to be a major contributor for baseload electricity generation. Deployment Strategy: Open funding opportunity announcement (FOA) in 23 topic areas for academia, non-profit entities, for-profit entities, state/local governments, and Indian tribes. DOE selected 11 national laboratories under a lab call that closed February 18, Funding: $80M in Recovery Act funds to rapidly commercialize technologies and reduce upfront risk: $23 million lab call and $57 million for industry projects. Performance Goal: Develop a suite of downhole tools that tolerate 300C and depths up to 10,000 meters
EGS Technology Research & Development FOA maximum award range: $1.5 to $5 million Awards: one to three years Two Year Performance Measure: Develop a suite of downhole tools that tolerate 300 o C and depths up to 10,000 meters Office of Science: R&D topics and merit reviewers EGS Research and Development (G2)
Validation of Innovative Exploration Technologies Reduce the high level of upfront risk during the early stages of geothermal project development. Discovery of as much as 400 MWe of confirmed geothermal energy capacity. Support discovery of the 30 GW of undiscovered geothermal resources identified by the USGS in G3
Validation of Innovative Exploration Technologies Milestones Validate two new, innovative exploration technologies. Confirm 400 MWe of new energy capacity. Procurement projects Release of FOA – May 27, 2009 FOA Closing Date – July 22, 2009 Selections – November 15, 2009 G3
Geothermal Classification and Resource Assessment Renew an existing interagency agreement with USGS in the amount of $5M in DOE funds to: –Expand geothermal resource assessments, including: High/moderate/low temp resources EGS, Co-produced fluids, geopressured, low temp Entire U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii –Develop new geothermal resource classification standards –Assist in the establishment of the National Geothermal Data System. G4
Geothermal Classification and Resource Assessment Milestones: –2009 Q4: USGS completes preliminary classification of nationwide EGS resources. –2010 Q4: USGS delivers revised and updated assessment of low- temperature geothermal resources. G4
National Geothermal Data System: Architecture: –Assessing and consolidating all geothermal data in a publicly accessible database will enable lower risk/cost deployment of geothermal energy. –The data system architecture and initial population are currently underway: the Geothermal Data Consortium, led by Boise State, has been selected to design and implement the NGDS. Geothermal Data Development, Collection, and Maintenance : –Develop, collect, and maintain data for all 50 states for the National Geothermal Data System. –Provide funding for state geologists, University professors, graduate students, as well as National Laboratories to update and maintain their data collections. G4
National Geothermal Data System: Milestones: –2009 Q4: Begin beta testing software to access National Geothermal Data System. –2010 Q2: Identify data sources and types for National Geothermal Data System. –2010 Q3: Complete data sharing procedures for National Geothermal Data System. –2010 Q4: Complete NGDS Protoype. Stakeholders : –Architecture: Local data sources? Roles of Users/Metadata registries/Online Data Collections –Geothermal Data Development, Collection, and Maintenance : Selection Factors: –Geographic diversity of data –Degree of student involvement from academic institutions –Diversity of the applicant’s teaming arrangement with other entities –Promotion and enhancement of the objectives of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, (job creation) G4
